If you own a DVC through resale what is the least amount of points you can buy retail to gain all the DVC perks? Is it worth it? Thank you

Currently it is 25 points as an add on (must match your current UY) with the exception of the new resort I believe (copper creek) which I heard on the board was 50.
Is it worth it? How many discounted AP do you plan to buy? How much merchandise do you normally buy that you would get a discount on? The thing is that none of these benefits are guaranteed to remain so buying retail just to have access to them isn't the best use of money. However a lot of new resale owners don't like the idea of being excluded from these discounts or special events that are run from time to time so they are willing g to outlay the extra cash to be considered a direct buyer. Only you can decide if it is worth it to you.

The merch discount can be replicated with a Disney Visa, so I don't even think that counts as an economic benefit.

How many Cheez-Its do you hope to eat in the Epcot lounge before they close Figment and tear it down to retirement Future World entirely?

You can buy whatever contract you find offered for sale. As CMNJ says, the smallest contract Disney sold was 25 points, so that is the de facto minimum number of points you can buy via resale. The smaller contracts go very quickly when offered for sale and are hard to find. As a result, those cost more per point than the larger contracts and the closing costs make them even more expensive.

So then are the points you purchase retail put onto your resale account? One more questions can you have two home resorts, one from resale and one from retail and if so which on can you book at eleven months out

You can book your home resorts at 11 months. You can't combine the different home resorts for booking at 11 months only at 7.

That's not entirely true. In the early days, they would sell even smaller add-ons. I've seen 13-point and 20-point contracts available via resale.

I think the Disney Visa merchandise discount is 10% for purchases >$50.

Afaik it's always been 25 point minimum for an add on. The handful of smaller ones likely was DVC making an exception for some particular reason to an owner - maybe misrepresentation from a sales guide or who knows what.

As I recall, those smaller contracts (a minimum of 5 as I recall) were a limited offer just for the early BLT buyers who were blindsided by a reallocation before the resort even opened. I'm not entirely sure those were even a separate contract (and thus eligible to be sold separately) or merely added to the Master the buyers originally purchased.

Perhaps there were other exceptions. If so, I don't remember them (wouldn't' be the first time my memory has failed, LOL).

I do think 25 points is the minimum you can buy. If you do the math then 25 points at $165 (depending on what resort you can get that add on for) is $4125. Depending on what discounts you would use would determine that value in this. Let's say you like to buy annual passes for a family of 4 (your mileage may vary) so that is a $100 per pass savings ($200 if you buy the gold pass). 200*4*5years would give you your purchase price back. So IF you buy AP's every year for 5 straight years then sure this discount pays off assuming they keep it. Also the other various 10% discounts help, lets say it saves $100 per trip to disney. So depending on how often you go and if you buy passes or not the discount could pay out. Of course you will have the value of your 25 points as well to use on rooms and you can put whatever value you want on that. IMO if you do not plan on getting AP's then the value of owning direct DVC points is fairly minimal.

You will end up with two contracts in your DVC membership, your original resale contract and your new "add-on" retail contract.

If you want to book a resort 11 months out, only home resort points are accepted as payment, meaning if you want to book BWV for example, then you must pay with BWV points. If your add-on contract is for the same resort as your original contract you can combine the points to book that resort 11 months out. If you add on at a different resort you will have two home resorts and can use the points at their respective home resorts 11 months out or you can combine them to book any resort 7 months out, subject to availability. If you want to book one of your home resorts using points from both contracts, you can book as many nights as possible using home resort points 11 months out and then try to add on additional nights using your non-home points once the 7-month window opens for those additional nights.

Perhaps there were other exceptions.
I recall years ago someone posted that after waiting a long time for an add-on somewhere, BCV perhaps, DVC sold it to them in two pieces. If I remember correctly, the owner ended up with most of the points on one contract and the remaining 10 points on a separate contract (or maybe it was 15 points on the second one?) I always wondered if DVC would step in and take the tiny contract if the owner ever decided to sell it.

Thank you Lisa that explains it perfectly

Other than the BTL issues, I don't think DVC intentionally sold contracts smaller than 25. What I understand they have done at times in the past is sell contracts to make up 25 and those could then be sold separately later.
