Resale add on to an old resale questions

My original 200 AKV points were purchased resale in 2011.

We have considered, on and off, for years, adding on a small BWV contract. This would be expressly used to book at BWV. Less often right now, more often in a few years when we retire. We enjoy the resort and proximity to Epcot.

Knowing the changes to resale contracts, here are my questions I can't find answers to:
1. in purchasing a BWV resale now, does my old AKV resale retain it's grandfathered status or do all of my points fall under the new changes? I didn't buy for discounts, but I do like them and wouldn't want to lose them...
2. If my intent is to use these points pretty exclusively at BWV, and I don't lose the perks I currently have, is there value in buying direct?

Thanks!!

1. Your old resale retains grandfathered status. Each contract is separate. Your new points would fall into the new changes.

2. God, no. You would not be able to use the BWV resale points to book Riviera or for exchanges, but, boo hoooo not.

Thanks!! Boo Hoo was my exact thought but wondered if I was missing something!

Boo Hoo, indeed.

Just want to add (for those who may not know), that it is becoming more and more of a challenge to book standard view studios at the BWV for most times of tie year. That's because there are many small contact owners already out there competing for those standard view studios. If you are going to be one of them, plan to book as soon as the 11 month window opens, and if you want to go in the fall through Marathon weekend, you may have to "walk" the reservation to get what you want.

To avoid the frustration, it's best to plan for the Pool/Garden category or a 1 bedroom, and I still recommend booking at the 11 month window for the "busy" times for DVC members.

1. No you would retain the perks from your original contract.
2. No reason to buy direct seeing you already have the perks. If you are only buying a small contract then if you want to stay at any of the new resorts then you could just work your trips so that you have your AK points available to use for booking. Buy resale and save yourself some $$.

I do have to add that in the event that you are looking at a small contract with a need for a certain UY and after watching and searching the resale market still are not able to find one then buying direct might be your only option. In the direct case you might make out better because you can work it to get a fully loaded contract whereas resale might only have contracts which are fully stripped or partially stripped.

Say you want an August UY -- you can potentially buy in July and pay only prorated MF for the August 2018 UY points. DVC can bank them into your August 2019 UY as part of your purchase.

I would start looking now for a small resale contract now.

Anything under 100 points goes fast and often really doesn't save you a lot once you factor in closing costs, the way dues are typically paid via resale vs direct and any "stripping " of points. Add in matching a UY and wanting a very specific #of points and basically, you find yourself looking for a unicorn.

Time is on your side if you start now.

Yes. I was looking at a couple of 25 pt contracts and the difference appears to be roughly 10% or $450. Not earth shattering considering what you are spending, but who am I to throw away $400! I need to nail down my spouse. He's got some crazy idea about buying an apartment building in our community as an investment and I'm all "just leave our money where it is and buy this little 25 pt contract for comparative peanuts" and after we look at the latest one tonight, I might win. I hope it needs tremendous upkeep...
