Here's a list of the 11 Representatives who voted against the $51 billion in disaster relief today:

---- NAYS 11 ---
Barton (TX - Republican)
Flake (AZ - Republican)
Foxx (NC - Republican)
Garrett (NJ - Republican)
Hostettler (IN - Republican)
King (IA - Republican)
Otter (ID - Republican)
Paul (TX - Republican)
Sensenbrenner (WI - Republican)
Tancredo (CO - Republican)
Westmoreland (GA - Republican)

I tried to visit some of their websites to find out why they voted against it but didn't find anything. If anyone finds anything I'm genuinely interested in their reasoning. Maybe they didn't think the funding was adequate and wanted more?

I'm glad none of my Reps. voted against it. I'm sure the Senate will approve it anyways, just found it kind of strange and wondered their reasoning...maybe they know something I don't. :confused3

I'm more interested in which Representatives voted down the funding for suring up the levees and other programs that would have reduced the extent of the damage.

That's nice. I'm more interested in this, hence me starting a thread about it LOL. (And that was probably pretty poor grammar, I don't know if I used 'hence' correctly.)

I'm glad someone has the common sense to wonder, not just who, but why! The devil is always in the details in legislation, and there may have been good reason. They're clearly out of step of almost everybody in the House, including their own party leadership - so it might be they wanted more. I know one of the LA Senators is against the appropriation because she wants more.

It might also be they didn't like the process of ramming things through so quickly. I know everybody in Washington wants to wants to respond quickly, but the fact is the government is going to spend whatever it takes and do the math later. There really isn't any fiscal emergency; it's just that the elected officials in both parties want to respond quickly (and also in a bipartisan way). Those 11 may have just wanted to be sure there was as comprehensive a plan as there could be at this point.

I can't imagine any congressman being opposed to spending money for this, and I'm sure they aren't. I'm betting there is some other issue.

I would be very interested myself. IS it because the funding would demand increased taxes? Possible the funding not addressing the "real" needs? I will be curious to find out.

And I would also like to know about the levees. In the days of the build up Katrina, multiple news reports stressed the enormity of damage that would take place if they failed. They all seemed to speak to "commom knowledge" that the levees/flood walls were an accident waitng to happen.

As an example of what I was talking about above -- I'd bet that there are evacuees from Katrina being housed temporarily in each of their districts. Certainly Texas has a few, and I know as of yesterday, we had 21 shelters open in Florida. Their "Nay" votes may be nothing more than their communities are fronting a bunch of money to house evacuees and were left out of the bill.

I'm just guessing.

But I didn't see the bill make any specifications as to geographical locations...maybe I missed it. It just seemed to allocate funds to specific agencies.

One of our representatives here in Georgia - Senator Johnny Isakson, Republican wrote an editorial that published today in the Atlanta Journal and Constitution and stated "I feel very stongly that we should continue our nation's unprecedented economic prosperity by making the tax cuts permanent"

These tax cuts that he is referring to are largely those for the wealthy (people who make over 1 million per year) and corporations (like the oil companies which have had profits this year that are up 30 - 50%).

So here is my question for Johnny Isakson and the republicans that feel as he does... we are spending one BILLION dollars a day on Iraq. We have already spent 10 BILLION on Katrina , the president has requested antoher 51.8 BILLION for Katrina and it is estimated that the aftermath of Katrina could actually cost the US Government 100's of Billions of Dollars (ABC NEWS Sept. 8, 2005 broadcast)...
So...where exactly do these republicans think that all this money is going to come from??? Isn't a republican supposed to be fiscally responsible???

It's time to vote these people OUT folks. This country can't stand anymore of their incompetence and greed.

I am disgusted by the NC rep. :( She isn't our direct rep but I sure hope that she doesn't make anyone vote against NC in spite if we are hit with a category 5 this year. :(

I am even more interested in where the funds that were sent to La. for flood control, etc ended up.

I too would like to know why. If it is because they have a good reason, such as those Jim has listed, then ok - otherwise those are 11 Republicans that need to be replaced.

Quote from Barbara Bush in a radio interview with the American Public Media program "Marketplace":

"What I'm hearing, which is sort of scary, is they all want to stay in Texas. Everyone is so overwhelmed by the hospitality. And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underpriviledged anyway, so this is working very well for them."

...reminds me of "Let them eat cake."

Yeah it will be nice to see their reasonsing. But even if they didn't feel like it was enough, isn't it better than nothing? :confused3 Who knows...lol...this IS politicians we're talking about!

I must have missed where Barbara Bush voted against it.

Yeah that really has NOTHING to do with this thread, whatsoever. You can start a new thread about it, but it's not cool to bring that up here. It's already been discussed to length...

I would like to know the answers to all of the questions brought up here...and more of course. I cannot imagine why they would vote the way they did.

I agree. It's also not a thread for passing out untrue "information" about tax cuts, so maybe that could go to another thread as well.

As to the OP, I'll be interested to see what the reasons were for these Congressmen not voting for the aid bill.

One thing that came to mind is that they are almost at the end of the fiscal year...maybe it is a numbers game? I dunno.
