We drove to WDW on July 17th and returned on today on the 24th. We decided to make it a two day trip... We were going to try it straight through, but we did not have a good sleep the night before. Anyway we left at 6 am.. because DW forgot her pocketbook.. we had to go back and get it. So that made us leave a hour later than planned. We live in Rockland County about 28 miles north of NYC. We decided to take thr NJ Turnpike instead of the Garden State Parkway to the Turnpike because of the rush hour. DW drove to the last rest area on the NJ turnpike. That was 120 miles. I took over and we decided to stop in Maryland for breakfast at around 10 am. We made it through the dreaded Baltimore to DC corridor with a back up at the Fort McHenry tunnel. We have EZ pass Thank GOD!!! We took the I495 West Beltway as AAA told us to do. They were right on the money with the Constuction Alerts on the triptick. We got stuck at one construction zone and made it through the dreaded springfiled "mixing bowl" at around 12:15 pm. We breezed through the rest of Virginia and snacked for lunch while driving, only stopping for gas and nature call breaks.. we went through Richmond with no probelm. We noted on the AAA triptick two construction zones in NC and on the the one of the construction web sites starting at Roanoke Rapids exit i60 to exit 150 a big construction snag. We came on that zone and lo and behold there was a traffic advisory stating that I95 will be closed for 20 minutes to a half hour. We took the detour offered and it was Us 301 south to go around it. It took about 20 minutes to go around that zone on that detour. We stopprd in Fayetville at 4 :20 pm for a rest. for half hour. t We crossed into SC at around 6pm and we decided to eat at Exit 2 to eat at the Golden Corral. We arrived at Santee SC at 8:15 pm at the Hampton Inn. 56 dollars AAA rate. 745 miles in 14 hours.
Day 2
We left at 9 :39 am went through Jacksonville .... it was only 55- 65 speed limit for 35 miles.... construction but no stops. We hit I4 around 2 pm. We were ok until we hit
Sanford. at 3pm we were stuck in traffic for like a half hour from Sanford to outside of Orlando. We pulled up to old Exit 27 pass through our traditional Hotel BLVD WDW gate @ around 4pm. we arrived at OKW at 410 pm. So it was 20.2 hours.
Return trip. July 23.
We went to E-night the eve before so we got a late start. We left the Charecter Warehouse in the Belze outlet mall off off I Drive at 12:43 pm. We drove to Emporia VA. Arrived at 12:45 am. 703 miles in 12 hours. We stayed at the Best Western clean and huge room with a Microwave. a big fridge and two queen beds for 54 dollars tax incl.!!! July 24th we left Emporia VA. at 10 30 am and we were lucky to not to ANY traffic thru DC or Baltimore. At 4 pm we were on the NJ turnpike We were listening to the Yankee game...on the Baltimore channel.. they lost grrrrr...lol We just wanted to hear how to see how the "other half " treats my beloved Yankees we were about 70 miles from NYC and we switched on to NYC's WCBS newsradio 88 for metro NYC's traffic info every "10 minutes on the 8's" we found out that Bruce Sprinsteen Concert #5( in a 7 concert stand) was at Giants Stadium. We had a dilmena. We knew the Garden state parkway is always a mess northbound related to normal northbound rush hour traffic. We knew the western spur of the Turnpike was going to be a parking lot because the western spur of the Turnpike gors right next to Giant Stadium. We decided to take the Eastern spur. and of course that was a mess too!!! Anyway it took us 2 hours to get from Newark Airport area to out home after taking every shortcut we know. So it was 1145 miles from WDW to our home in Wesley Hills New york in actual driving time of 22 hours.
until we hit that major traffic snafu.... we make about 55 miles in a hour's time that includes all stops for fuel/ eats. nature calls. I always drive 10 MPH over the posted limit.. and use cruise control at every chance I get. it cuts down on driver's fatigue. i hope this helps. Gas prices ranged from 1.31 in Georgia to 1. 54 in SC.
