Report Card Grades

How does your kid's school give grades?

Our school has a 1-4 scale, but it is not like the 4 point scale from 'my day' (saying that makes me feel OLD!).

I guess you have to be at least one year ahead of grade standard to get a 4 and it is not possible to get a 4 in most subjects. I think it is weird.

What does your school do?

We just changed to the same system for K-3. It is confusing. My dd in 2nd grade got all "A"'s on her work, but all 3's on her report card. Since I just saw it, I haven't talked to the teacher yet, but this is my question...it appears that if you get anywhere from an "80" to a "100", you will get a 3. (which means meets standards) Doesn't make sense.

We have the same grading system here. All of my son's classwork, homework,and most projects are scored level 1-4.

Level 4 is 90-100
Level 3 is 80-89
Level 2 is 65-79
Level 1 is 64 and below

Our school for grades K-2 doesn't give grades. The kids are given a list of objectives at the beginning of the year. The report cards are divided into three columns not developing, partially
mastered, and mastered. The appropriate column is checked each quarter.

Starting in 3rd grade they begin to receive letter grades on the 94-100 = A scale that most grade schools use.

That at least makes sense. Our 1-4 scale is not like that.

Level4-More than 1 full grade above standard
Level3-80-100%
Level2 60-80%
Level1 Less than 60%

This used to frustrate me so much-the elementary my kids went to used this grading scale
O=above EXPECTED level
e-at expected level
p-progressing toward expected level
N-not progressing toward expected level
Note that it does not say grade level, but expected level. I asked the principle why they used a completely subjective grading system and was told that it was not subjective at all-that the students had to meet standards for each level

When my oldest was in 5th grade he came home with an E in reading-standardized testing indicated a 12th grade reading level and a college level vocabulary. I happened to find out that my neighbors child -nice boy but did not read at a 12th grade level-had gotten an O. When I asked the principle how that could be her answer-"We should be able to expect more from Brandon"-that sounds subjective to me!
