Replacement windows?

The cold weather we have had lately has really shown how much air my windows are letting in and out. Our house is only 5 years old, but I think that the builder must have used the cheapest single pane windows he could find. I have tried looking on line for a ball park estimate to replace them with double pane, but haven't found any near our measurements (windows are 52" x 72"). So... does anyone have estimates of how much it might run per window of that size? And who do I go to for an actual quote. I know that Sears does replacement windows, but I imagine they are pricey.

If somebody in the family is handy you can replace them yourself. If you can replace a toilet, sink or a door you can replace your own windows. I did my whole house with Lowe's replacement vinyl windows that are made by Pella. The first one took me a full day but after that i was doing 4 or 5 a day. Not that much work and they cost ~ $200 each for normal windows. They (lowe's or Homedepot) will also install if you do not want to do it yourself. If you run by your local post office and get a movers packet, there is a 10% off coupon that you can use for anything. They never question and are happy to take them. good luck

Look for small lumber yards, they will usually come out and measure each window and give you an estimate. I am in the process of replacing all of our windows, we went with the Farley brand windows(double hung, double pane, tilt in for cleaning, and has low Argon E in between the pans of glass) each window was about 225. Our windows are 27 x 47 (older house) so each window had to be custom

We found the small lumber yards really want your business and are willing to work for it especially on the customer service end. My dealer has treated me well and I have recommended several other people to go with him and they have and liked his service.

ETA: My first window took about 3 hours to put in, but each window afterward took only about 30 minutes. It is much easier than most people think.

Here's what I'd suggest after our own experience:

DON'T bother with Castle Windows
Use a local company that's been around a while- we used one in our small state of CT and now that we have a problem, found out they went out of business!
If I was looking to do it now, I would go with Anderson replacement windows, but they weren't making replacement windows when we were looking.

Anderson or Pella are good brands. Dh has replaced most of the windows in our house himself, and didn't find it to be that difficult.
