Repairing a Wii

Has anyone had the disc reader go out on their Wii? Everything works on our Wii, but it won't read discs. Obviously, this is a major issue since we can't play any games. Don't know if it is worth it to get it repaired or not. I hate to spend $200 on a new one though. We have so much money wrapped up in the Wii with games and other equipment, it would be a waste not to get it repaired or buy a new one. Just wanted to know if this has happened to anyone else and if so, how it costs to get it repaired.

Have you checked the Wii website? Depending on when you purchased it and whether or not you have your receipt, you may be able to get it fixed for only the cost of shipping. And one of the earlier batches of consoles, I understand, had a disk reader problem that the company had been repairing free of charge. I would contact Nintendo and give them all the info you have, including date of purchase, serial number, etc. They'll probably get back to you with an estimate for repair. I wouldn't take it to a third party unless you have used them before for repairs.

as Wii's are getting older this seems to be a recurring common problem. Ours was one of the first Wii's off the production line, stood in line 13 hours to get it, and it was not repaired free cost me $89 I believe now though a lot are getting the same repair for under $50 and that still includes the new 1 year warranty.

here is a thread about the same thing:

We just had that happen to ours! We called the 1-800 # and they asked for the serial number from the Wii, so have that handy. They plugged it into their system and told us it was the disc drive. They wanted $80+ to fix it, so my son said he didn't want to pay that much! Then the lady said, how about $40? We went with that. Sent the Wii in and had it back, fully functional in less than a week. With a new 1 year guarantee. I wasn't sure if I wanted to get it fixed either, but it was much better to pay $40 than another $200 for a new one. :rotfl:

My sister is also having problems with hers. I need to tell her about this. :thumbsup2

We had issues with ours last spring, bought it over Black Friday. It was wearing the discs irregularly. There was a 1/2 scuff on the discs we used regularly so they couldn't be read. They fixed it for free and promptly and replaced the few damaged discs. Call the 1-800 number. Based on the serial number they will know where and when you purchased it.

Ours stopped working in late August (unable to read disc). I really want to get it fixed so I can buy Toy Story Mania. I am dying to play the game because I love the ride. However, I don't know if I can justify $85.00 to get it repaired right now. I went online and filled out the forms but never paid, maybe I should call. I would consider fixing it for $40.

Definitely call. They are much easier to work with on the phone. I don't think $40 or even $50 would be bad especially when you get it back with a new 1-year warranty. We sent my son's DSi in and had it back in less than a week. It came back with an extended warranty. So, it's worth a shot.

Call Nintendo. It was a fixed $75 fee to repair and return our console.

Ours needed to be fixed about a year ago (late Nov. 08) ~ I purchased it Feb. of 2008 so we were still within our 1 year warranty period ~ they emailed me a shipping label so it shipped for free and they fixed it for free, we were given a new 1 year warranty and it's working just fine - no problems. I just gave them the serial number and by that they could see where I bought it, and what date - pretty fancy.

I just called them and it is a standard $75. I decided it was worth that. I didn't really want to spend another $200 for a new set. Hopefully it will work. Thank you everyone for the advice.
