Renting ???

We are new DVC members and havn't even used our points yet. We have a ressie at DLR in June but are now unable to go because of car problems that are going to cost all our vacations savings. I know that these points are in the Disney Collection now and have to be used by Dec 1, 2006. We won't be able to take a vacation because I'm having a baby in Oct. Does anyone think I could rent these points out (150 pts)? I've never done it before (obviously, new members), and don't know anything about doing this. This is the only place I would go for advice about this, what do you guys think? TIA

I'd see if you can rent the reservation itself first. If you are unable to do that, then offer your "Reservation Points" for rent on the DVC Rent/Trade board. Be sure to cancel that reservation more than 30 days in advance or they will have an additional limitation and could only be used to make a reservation 60 days in advance.

"Reservation Points" are points from a cancelled non-DVC reservation. They can only be used for non-DVC options, so make sure you let people know in your offering that the points have that limitation - to save yourself some aggravation.

Be sure to follow the directions about titling your offering. (The title should be "Reservation For Rent" or " Points for Rent".)

Thank you. I don't know if anyone would want the reservation because it is for two rooms for 3 nights. So many rules to follow!

Not at all. If car problems can cost a member their vacation savings then they need to seriously consider cashing out.

I would try to rent the reservation rather than the points first. Especially if it is during a busy time when its hard to get a reservation. When is it for? I think lots of people go with a big family/group. We are going in a couple of weeks, and my daughter was dieing to stay at Wilderness Lodge, but it was all booked up. Boy - if someone was offering a confirmed reservation I would have rented it within seconds for whatever price. I think a confirmed reservation is an advantage over points, but that's just if there is someone out there that needs that time. It should go fast, but if it doesn't then go the points route. That should give you extra cash to fix your car too!

Thank you. That's what I have been told. I think I'll try to rent the reservation. Now how much does a reservation go for, is the price based on points? I would not want to put a reservation out there for rent that is too low, some people seem to hate that

The above notwithstanding, I agree with Doc's sensible advice. DVC is a long-term thing, and there is no need to get hysterical or panic just because you had one minor setback. Postponing a vacation due to an unexpected expense is what big people do, and using sound judgement doesn't disqualify you as a "worthy" DVC owner.

If you can rent your ressie, or points (and to answer your question, points usually rent for about $10 per point), fine. If not, you will lose them, but that's not the end of the world -- it's just a vacation you didn't get to take one year. With the excitement of the baby, you won't even remember it a year from now.

Have a great baby and go to DVC next year.

You can rent next year if need be too. Perhaps the baby will be too young to travel. There is a lot of talk of people wanting to raise the rent prices so 10.00 should go pretty quickly.

Thank you JimMIA for saying that. We will definately be at Satrs Wars weekends next year if I have to kidnap DH to do it The baby will just be another addition to the family and is causing no hardship or trouble on my part. DS's first trip to WDW was when he was 5 months old. Thank you for the advice, all of you!
