Has anyone been asked for their full name prior to a renter committing to a reservation so they can do a deed search to verify your the owner? I may be dealing with a potential renter that isn't to happy with the price of a stay.

I'm not sure why it would hurt to give out your name to one person. Sure people seem to worry about identity theft these days, but names aren't exactly difficult to come by. Seems like it would be the up-front thing to do if you are dealing with a nervous renter. If you were going to send someone several hundred (or thousand) dollars, wouldn't you at least want to know their name first?

That said, it's worth noting that you could just as easily look up the name of a DVC owner in the Orange County deeds and pretend to be that individual. Doing the record search really doesn't add any security to the transaction.

Still, I fail to see the harm.

I agree with Tim. It is reasonable for someone involved in a financial transaction to be asked to disclose their full legal name. I don't see it as a big deal.

I'm not sure I see the connection between the price unhappiness and asking for the name. Hopefully you've been paid in full for a November stay by this point.

Good luck. :)

Thanks guys....I did PM my full name but I have never been asked before. Generally when I rent I have a contract that has my full name, address, phone numbers right on the paper. I just seemed that the tone of the PM was one of I'm trying to take someone's money because I'm priced a few dollars higher than the norm.

I would probably give them my name, but I would also tell them I am not holding the reservation for them while they do their checking. If someone else wants it and sends the money, it's gone.

IMHO, you have been around long enough and have enough posts on the DVC Boards to make a check of the deed records unnecessary - esp since it is very easy for someone to look up a name if they were bent on defrauding someone. I'd be very comfortable renting from you (if I needed to rent) and willing to pay more because I know you know exactly how DVC works.

IMHO, potential renters worry too much about "malice and aforethought" and not enough about plain old incompetence, LOL. Most problems we hear about come from misunderstandings and owners or renters who have no idea how DVC really works. JMHO. YMMV

I had a renter also ask me for the same information. Granted, I have only been posting here since June. She did a property search for me and tried to find me on the white pages (which probably made her more suspicious because we are unlisted due to my wife working for the child support division and formerly working as a caseworker who determined eligibility for food stamps).
We rented points a couple of times before and did sweat a little bit, so I could understand..........but it is hard to prove you are who you say you are, LOL.

I'd suggest being very careful about responding to reservation requests when they are more than 30 days before arrival since it is expressly prohibited to offer existing reservations more than 30 days in advance.

We have had a number of people actually send complaints (along with the emails or PMs they have received) when posters have been soliciting existing reservations thru the Rent/Trade Board. Some have even lost access to the Rent/Trade Board for doing so.

In order to offer an existing reservation it must be within 30 days of arrival and in order to respond to a "Reservation Wanted" thread with an existing reservation you must already have a "Reservation for Rent" thread validated and active on the Rent/Trade Board. Offering an existing reservation in any other context is not allowed.

Offering to call MS to make a reservation is fine. Part of the reason for the "DVC Reservation Availability" board is to provide renters more information about dates they might be interested in renting.

Please review the posting rules at the top of the Rent/Trade board to make sure any posts are in compliance with the board policies.

To clarify, that's a DIS rule, not a DVC rule?

Apparently I didn't read that far into the rules. I appreciate the info everyone thank you.........
