I am interested in renting points. Do I need to make sure I rent from someone with the same home resort as myself?

You don't actually "rent points." When people talk about renting, what the usually mean is paying an owner to make a reservation that you can then use. For renting, it doesn't matter if they owner has the same home resort as you; you don't even have to be a DVC member to "rent points."

The other option is to pay an owner to transfer some of their points to you. You do have to be an owner to accept a transfer, but it doesn't matter if they have the same home resorts as you. The points they trasfer keep their home resort and use year. So if your home resort is AKV, and you pay an owner at BCV to transfer points to you, you can make a reservation at BCV with those points 11-months out. But you can't make a reservation at AKV 11-months out with those points, even though that's your home resort.

Thank you. And I did mean to ask if we both need to be from the same resort. So I guess if my primary goal is to secure a reservation at my home resort, it is best to acquire transfer points from my home resort.

If you are short points and need extra home resort points to make a reservation at 11 months out at your home reservation, then you want to find a member with points from the same resort as you. And the same UY as you are using. You will be getting a transfer from another member, not renting points.
