Renting Reservations-NAMES/AGES up front

Occasionally, I'll make reservations for friends, or sell a reservation when I have extra points. Regardless, I always used to book a reservation in my name, then swap out the name at a later date.

Now DVC requires ALL names and ages up front. This is a real inconvenience for me, as I prefer to make the arrangements first, not knowing which of my friends/family might actually use them.

Anybody have any suggestions in dealing with this???

Disney doesn't like renting. This is another way to reduce rentals without coming right out and banning them. If they did that, you would see the resale market go crazy.

I generally will book what I need and give them the info I have. My trip in August we added 2 more of the adult kids to that ressie. I just called and added their names, no problem.

DVC, but they didn't make the decision in a vaccuum. There has been a lot of complaining from members over speculative renting - booking a room you don't intend to use yourself and auctioning it off on eBay or something.

Members don't decide on anything with DVC - DVC manages the contract. Occasionally, they ask our opinion, or reverse a change if we complain too much. But we really don't have any ability to make process decisions, and we really have very little influence over what decisions are made.

Just make the reservation in your name and call to change it when you have a renter. Just say "I am now unable to use my reservation, so my friend/cousin/co-worker is going to use it". I have had no issues at all when I have done this.

I actually think that Disney is using it for Marketing. Or will be. I can hear it now:

"I see you have two kids - they look like they might be the right age to enjoy the Pirates and Princess Party. For an extra $900.00 we can book you for a party within your vacation."

I agree, just make it in your name up front and tell them you don't know who will be using it, which is truthful. You can always change/add later.

they won't let you book it if you don't know the name up front now. They made me call back with ALL the names, and ages, and addresses for a recent reservation I made for some neighbors.

I guess I'll just deal with it as advised.

I just made a couple of ressies yesterday, and I told them to put it in my name. They didn't seem to want to, but in the long run they did it any way!

I have never rented out a reservation, and I don't really ever intend to unless something happens where I can't use it, but the POS CLEARLY gives me that right! I really think if you make the reservation in your name and change it at a later date, there is nothing they can do to stop you. Just give them your name and address and those of your family for starters and change it later. All timeshares have the ability for people to rent them out. It's an industry standard. I believe DVC would be making a HUGE mistake if they suddenly flat out banned all renting. That truly would be limiting the ability for a member to use their ownership in the manner prescribed under the terms most of signed when we purchased.

On the other hand, I CAN see how DVC might limit speculative renting by not allowing anyone but the owner's name to be placed on a reservation at the 11 month booking window. If the owner chose to change the names, they might limit that ability between the 11 and 7 month booking windows and only allow the change of names after the 7 month window. In my opinion, that would quell a lot of spec rentals, since they have already said there is an imaginary line in the sand drawn at 20 reservations. It would require those who are spec renting to make additional calls to MS, and that would make it a bit less clean cut when renting.

There IS a difference between having all the names on the reservation at once and changing the names. If someone is routinely changing names on up to 20 reservations, it's going to be a red flag about renting for profit.

It seems to me if Disney wants to quell the spec renting and renting as a business, they can find better ways of doing it that aren't going to effect the normal owner who needs to occationally rent out their points. What about the people we know of who own 2,3, and 4 times the number allowed points and using them to routinely rent out by having the max points in the name of each different family member? Some of those are like holding companies and cartels! It just seems to me there is a better way to police this than they are doing.

Require the name of the person checking in at time of reservation. Allow any other changes, but that person has to be there. If you want to change that name, you lose your place in line, and go behind any folks on the waiting list. If the wait list doesn't come through, you get to bank the points no matter what.

I have no idea if this is a good idea or not. But if you want to get rid of spec renatls, get rid of them. Don't make secret unnanouced rule changes that mostly just annoy the membership.

I have never seen this as an issue.
I've never had a problem adding or deleting names as time passed. Perhaps that's because my name was always included on the ressie.

If you change the ressie from the Smith family to the Jones family, perhaps it may be different.

I have a 1 bdrm booked for F&W. I'm planning on taking my best gf's from work. Well, when I was talking to my sister about it, she said she wanted to go.

I called and added her to the reservation. It took 5 seconds. ( I also went on the waitlist for a 2 bdrm )

I think you were the victim of a poorly trained CM. If that had happened to me, I would have politely asked to speak to a Supervisor.

Did they "hold" the reservation for you or were you just lucky in that availability wasn't a problem?

I have rented on several occasions and always have given my family name, then later when I have all the info from the renter, I change it all at one. It has not been a problem. I did this most recently about 6 weeks ago.

I agree... and furthermore:

At the time of booking I have no idea who is going to arrive on which dates. I put my name as primary, along with DW, DD1, DD2. Sometimes my work schedule changes and I need to arrive a few days later. Other times one of our daughters arrives on day 1... and the rest arrive later. Other times... we might have flight cancellations for some, but not all of us (since we fly in from various cities). Still other times... one of our DD's might decide to bring their BF along.

Sorry... good try, but this recommendation will not work. When our children were young, we would always arrive together. However, most people will have their situations change several times over the life of their contract.
