I am an owner with 100 points left in my 2020 use year, expiring Dec. 2021. Can I use these points for a Dec. 18, 2021 reservation or do they expire on Dec. 1, 2021?

If I rent points through a broker, for a Nov. 1, 2021 reservation and the park closes, I have to give the money back (Dave). What happens to the points? If I get them back it will be too late to bank them and I wont be able to use them with the parks closed. Should I bank them now and then make that Nov. 1 reservation with the knowledge that, if the parks closed, I would still have use of the points until Dec. 2022?

I know, a lot of what ifs, lol.

Thanks, Tony

Are these already banked? If not, then you have until end of July to bank. They would then be good for you December trip.

If they are banked 2019 points, then they will expire end of November, 2021 regardless.

Not banked, they are 2020 use year points. Would I be better off to bank them or will it not matter in the case of a park closure
thanks,
Tony

What is your use year?

I assume it is December as there are no November use years for DVC

That means your December 2020 points will expire November 30, 2021 and can not be used for Dec 18, unless you bank them NOW as anything booked after Dec 1, 2021 needs to be 2021 points, not 2020 points.

You can bank December 2020 points up until July 31, 2021 and then those points can ONLY be used for December 1, 2021 to November 30, 2022 reservations.

Thus, to book a November 2021 reservation, you can do that now with your Dec 2020 points, but if a cancellation happens, they will expire November 30, 2021 so that leaves little time to rebook (if that is something you want to do)

* My personal opinion is to bank them if you do not plan on travel before Nov 30, 2021 and use extreme caution for any reservations during October or November as those are close to the expiration date of your points (this is only important if you want to cancel and rebook) *

With more and more Americans receiving vaccines, what leads you to believe that the parks may close again? I really doubt that would happen.

Especially in Florida.

I think you can assume that if a park closure should occur, DVC will try to do something for owners, as they did previously. Now, yeah, maybe it wasn't the total amnesty and banking some wanted, but they did do something. I would expect that again.

I don't think the parks will close again, but I never say never and want to make sure I don't lose my points. I can't travel to US yet so my only recourse is to rent my points. I would go now if I could, without a vaccine (not old enough yet) and wear a mask.

Thanks DVC doc for your explanation.

I’m not sure this question was answered. If you bank your 2020 points now, they’re stuck in 2021 UY (starting 12/1/21) and cannot be used for a Nov. 2021 reservation. So if you bank now and then book a Nov. 2021 stay, you’ll have to borrow from UY 2021 (subject to the 50% borrowing rule), and if that stay is canceled, those points will be stuck in 2020 UY and expire 11/30/21.

The only way to book Nov. 2021 and guard against losing points would be to book it now but be prepared to make a “go-no go” decision before July 31. July 31 would be your last day to cancel the Nov. booking and bank those points to 2021. On Aug. 1 they’re committed to the 2020 UY.

I dont know what it is like in your area, but MANY people I know got the vaccine by showing up near the end of the day and asked if there were any cancellations or no shows or extra vaccine left. I know about a dozen or so people that got it that way in Florida and once you get the first shot, you are guaranteed the second.

As a vaccine volunteer - please do not just show up unless you know the vaccination site and health agency permits it - some states are far more organized and strict then others - and some facilities are much more strict than others. Plus, we've simply gotten better at making sure there isn't extra vaccine left. At the site I work we use every drop. We have lists that we call if there will be extra at the end of the day - those lists are full of prioritized people still. Last Friday we had all of TWO cancellations/no shows - out of about 500 - almost no one misses this appointment. And both were filled with a few phone calls. We are also crowded - the space we are using really should be larger - and trying to maintain social distancing - we simply don't have physical space for anyone without an appointment - especially since at this time many people are showing up with a caregiver and a lot of them are in bulky wheelchairs. At this point, my site is still 90% high risk individuals - elderly - for many this is the first time they've been out of their home in a year and being at the site is as much risk as they've taken. (The other 10% is teachers and secondary health care staff - like cleaning staff). Next week I think you'll be exposing chemo patients and organ transplant recipients if you just show up at my site. We don't want to expose those people to someone who has been going to restaurants and is just "swinging by" to see if they can get a shot. We are putting as many people through the site per day as we can - and we really don't have time to deal with this - especially now that vaccine allocations have increased. The first thing we do is check to see if you have an appointment, if you don't we send you home with instructions on how to get an appointment - once your turn comes up.

This sounds mean and I know everyone is so ready to be DONE, but please, follow the instructions your state and vaccinator have set out and be patient. Vaccinating 360 Million people in the U.S. in six months is going to stretch us to the limits.

^^^ I agree....thank you for your volunteer service!!!!

Florida is like the Wild Wild West and some people make multiple different appointments (I am definitely not suggesting to do this) for their first shot and then obviously dont cancel or show up at some of them, and they go unused and then there is a 6 hour window or so to use the vaccine or throw it in the garbage.

There are TONS of people I know that got the vaccine just by being lucky and in the right place at the right time. But this may not work in other parts of the country, so do your homework. Also, it does not matter what one you get and there are three versions now. And thank the volunteers at these centers.

In my area of FL, the senior population has been to a large degree inoculated and the health centers are now advertising for 18-64 age group, with any health issues. First responders were among the first, along with seniors.

Just a reminder that discussions like this should go to the community board and not within the DVC threads. Thanks all!

Thanks Carolyn for the clearest explanation of banking and borrowing I've ever read and I've been a member since 93, lol. It always confuses me but I'm going to copy your reply and save it for future use.

You are so welcome! Shortly after we purchased in 1997 I created a very simple spreadsheet because one of the first things we did was to borrow points! And I realized I'd never keep things straight without seeing it on paper. Here are the column headings:
DateEVENT Points AddedPoints UsedBank FromBank ToBalanceNotes
The most important entries in the Date column are Sept. 1 of each year, because that's our UY. The Event for that Date is of course New Use Year, and under Points Added I enter 300 which is the number of points we have. Whenever we book something - or when we're planning and want to know we have enough points - the dates of the reservation are entered under Date, the details (e.g. BWV 2 BR P/G view) go under Event, and the number of points required go under Points Used. Then of course I subtract to get the Balance of points remaining after that stay. Having to enter the dates of all reservations in chronologic order makes it very clear which UY the reservation falls in! I don't have a column for borrowing, because the spreadsheet automatically calculates it for me and reduces the next UY's points accordingly.

Hope that helps!

Very impressive.

I am old school and use a MS word document and just use tabs and grunt labor with a calculator everytime I make a reservation. Not too fancy, but it keeps me organized.
