First off I know basically NOTHING about the DVC, but a few people have mentioned to me I should check into renting points for someone. How exactly does this work? I see several posts saying they have 10 points, 200 points, etc. to rent, how many would I need? I assume your length of stay and the resort you choose would depend the amount you need, but I don't get how it all works. Can anyone help me out at all with this? Thanks everyone!!

At the top of the board here, right hand side is a link to DVC point charts. Depending on when/where/type of room you need, you can calculate how many points will be required.

You are really renting a reservation from a DVC member - they make the reservation and you are paying them for it. It's a private transaction between you and another individual.

There is also a sticky at the top of the Rent/Trade forum (here in the DVC area of the DIS boards) explaining the risks/rewards of renting.

I found mousesavers website helpful..... worth the effort due to the great savings on room rates.

What you are really doing is renting a reservation from a DVC member. They make it using their DVC points and you pay them for the reservation.

How many points the reservation needs depends, as you say, on length of stay and resort, as well as time of year.

You can get the villas for a great discount, compared to Disney.

However, you give up a few things such as daily mousekeeping, control over the reservation (you can't even call about it), and usually stricter cancellation polices.

And, these are not eligible for any Disney specials like free dining since this is really a private transaction between renter and DVC member.

I think it is important to read the sticky that discusses renting so you know what you are getting before deciding.
