Renting points

Hi,

Continuing my search of an interesting resale, the following point is not very clear to me :

Is it easy to rent banked points let's say at 10$ and is there any risk doing it ?

The reason why i'm wondering is that some resales, which at first look a little bit expensive, have part of last year's points banked + the current year ones available. Since I'll be driving to WDW in just 40 days from now for the 3rd time in the last 10 months, I'm willing to sell them to reduce my investment cost.

That way, the real cost for me, instead of 65$ / point could come down to something around 50$ / point, or I could buy 200 pts for the price of 150.

Am I ok to calculate that way ?

I think i'm not real far from joining you all as a member ;)

Thanks in advance

Hi WDWorld!
IN MY OPINION the risk in renting points is that you are responsible for damages ect... This may never have been a problem in the history of DVC, but it is just one of those things that I could not be comfortable with.
As far as other risks & ease of renting I can not say, as I have not rented points.
Remember if 1/2 of last years points are banked, and you rent those for $10/pt, that is realy a savings of only $5/pt. I think I would use them!
Good luck on your decision, and keep us posted.

I have rented a few times but am no expert. It was obvious to me that the less time your points can be used for, the less valuable they are. Banked points may not be valid for an extended period, therefore will be less valuable. Once you get into the 7 month window, and your points are only good for another 6 months for example, they would less valuable than someone who had points available at the 11 month window.

Also don't forget that if you buy resale, you will usually be asked to pay the seller back for the maintenance fee on those banked points. You can negotiate this, so keep it in mind as you purchase and negotiate. But if you do pay it back, that cuts into your calculation of costs.

Good luck. Bargains are out there. Take a look at Dean's recent post on this page.
