Renting Points

I have recently sold DVC points to pay for a Disney Cruise. I got a lot of inquires non-DVC people who wanted me to check the availability of a standard view at BWV during peak seasons. :rotfl2: I try to explain that standard view is very difficult to get. I have tried to help people out but when I try to get standard view and only preferred view is available they have to check with their husband/wife/sister/brother then they want me give them a preferred view for the price of standard. I also get the poor mouth, “We can only afford $9.00 per point.” :crazy2: If their budget is that tight they should make a reservation at All Star Music. I have found that some people have other reservations but are trying to upgrade at my expense. I have finely got to the point that I will not attempt to make a reservation unless they give me three choices. Price negotiation is out of the question. They are getting a great deal as it is.

set your price and stick to it. If they want lower and you won't go lower, then tell them to look elsewhere. It is your decision.

I can see how that would be very frustrating for you. Don't you just love when people try to nickel and dime you to death? Enjoy your cruise!!

Thank you for posting your experience.

Renting is a nice option for owners to have, but it is not always as easy as one might think from reading these boards. :)

Best wishes -

That is just part of renting. I rented out a lot of points in the past month and I spent a lot of time checking reservations and helping people out. Just wait until you find an open week for someone and then find out that they post it on the boards looking for a cheaper price. You are going to find that renting is a lot of work and there are some renters who do not appreciate your time. A lot of renters do understand that hard work and appreciate what you do which makes it worth it. It is probably due to the amount of work that people price their points below their fair market value. Based upon my experience the lower the price the quicker you will unload your points. Good luck.

I second CarolMN's thanks.

I know when we join we are likely to rent eventually. I'm just afraid my personality won't be conducive to negotiating. If they try to talk me down to $9, I'm likely to say "Sorry, pal, the sale just ended and the price is now $11." Maybe we'll end up going to WDW every year after all!

yes he could lower his price - but then he would have to sell more points - so why sell the points in the first place if you can't get what you want for them - just use them for the cruise in the first place....

stick with it - I am referring alot of people from the Disney resort as well as the welcome board.

someone will definitely take them at your price.

I have rented points several times now, and I have had many of the same experiences you mentioned. I understand your feelings, it's so frustrating! I received alot of those messages "I can only afford to pay $9"--I just say "Good luck, but my price is firm." Now I know to state in my post that the price is firm, that way you won't get those cheapskates. I have also learned that you don't do ANYTHING until the renter has agreed to all your terms, because most people stop at that point if they are not serious about renting from you.

I have made several good friends renting, people who return to rent again. There are lots of good people out there--but, unfortuneately, there are alot of stinkers, too. :crazy2:

I know there is a primer for buying resales, but is there one for renting? That could be very handy.

On the other hand, you got what you wanted. So why the big old mad face smilie. Obviously you worked something out with someone. So renting paid off for you. I am glad that the people I worked with weren't so crabby.

What about going through all the hoops and never getting your deposit. Booked a 2 bedroom preferred view at BWV and haven't been paid......Looks like I'll be cancelling that ressie. I did give them 2 more mailing days to come up with the money....stupid me...... :scratchin

And to think they are trying to "nickel and dime" you on an offer that is usually half or even below half of rack rate, if that is even available! A one-bedroom condo at points costs what a discount on a moderate WDW hotel room would be, and they are still trying to quibble over a few dollars -- plus they often want it at the very last minute, not realizing how DVC ressies work with last minute being so hard to get, and yet not willing to pay for last-minute service either.

I'm *such* a hard-a** about this, I make people use paypal, if they try and talk me down I tell them that's not an option and they're welcome to call someone else, I have no patience for that nonsense.

The people that start out nickle and diming you will nickle and dime you throughout the the entire process, and it's not worth it.

I cut the whiners loose immediately! pirate:

Yep. Been there, done that. Hopefully never again. I have had darling renters (when we got in a bind and had to rent) and some that became friends. I gotta say I found a lot more that were similar to your experience.

But now that that's over, :cool1: Hope you enjoy your cruise.

Make a reservation at a desirable time and sell it at a nice discount from Disney rack rate. You didn't mention the home resort of the points your selling. Sometimes you can use your home resort advantage to book say F&W at BCV or BWV, etc.

If I were renting, I would choose one of four options for ANY potential renter who wanted to dicker on the price:

  1. Right click, delete
  2. Highlight, delete icon
  3. Drag and drop to the "Deleted Items" folder
  4. Or...and this would be my preferred option if I had plenty of time to toy with them: answer their email and offer $9.85 pp. Then, haggle back and forth, until we agreed around $9.25 pp. I'd be real busy during this period and a day or two would go by between negotiating steps. When we'd finally agreed on a price, I'd tell them there was no availability. It's the equivalent of telling a telemarketer "Hold on a sec" when they ask for "Mr. or Mrs. Xxxx."
Renting is difficult enough under the best of conditions. If I had someone trying to beat me down on price, I wouldn't rent to them at ANY price.

You're not stupid. After all, you hold all the cards. That's the beauty of having control of the points and the reservation. They don't pay ... the reservation gets cancelled. I had to do that with one of my return renters. He rented from my twice with no problems and then he talked it up to his family and they wanted in with him. I booked 3 standard view BWV studios (I called when I was on vacation myself) and gave him 3 weeks to get a deposit to me. 5 weeks later and no check. I finally had to threaten to cancel the reservation and the check was to me that week. I didn't want to have to do that, but my friendly reminder didn't work. I think he was having problems getting his family to come up with the deposit.

If your rented doesn't come up with the money (after a clear warning) then cut him loose, cancel the reservation and find someone else. I have rented points about 6-8 times and this is the first hint of a problem I ever had. Given my renter's track record, I think I'll get my second 50% in plenty of time.

I am highly insulted. I attempted to rent points from U and U stated U would get back to me. I wanted BWV or BCV. U stated it would be hard to get standard but maybe preferred would be available to send U my info IE name, address....

U wanted my phone # also, on the chance these would not be available. I gave U all the info asked for. U didnt even email me back that U would not be able to help me. After a few days I was able to rent from another VERY NICE and helpful DVC member who rented me points for SSR. I am very happy with this reservation. I paid the renters price which was above the $9 mark by bankcheck the next day. I offered to overnight the bank check the DVC member said this would not be necessary. I will probably only have contact with this member again when I receive the confirmation in the mail and when I send my thank you letter.

Why am I insulted because I was one of the people U are saying U attempted to rent to who tried to take advantage of U. I had no problem paying your $10 pp. U did not get back to me to finalize the deal. I am actually happy about this now as I am dealing with a DVC member who can follow thru with me in a short period of time and not waste my time or his.

May I add THANK YOU to all the DVC members who are KIND enough to rent out their points to those of us to make us be able to make the kind of memories DVC offers. I for one am very thankful for your kindness and generosity.
