Okay, I'm sure this has been asked over and over again but I am seriously considering renting my points to pay cash for a cruise instead of using the points as I will come out quite a bit ahead doing it this way. I have gotten lots of help from folks encouraging me; however, just want to ask one more time, is this allowed? I'm not going to be questioned by MS when I call about making reservations for others am I or telling me they cannot make the reservation if that's what it's for. Just a little more encouragment needed before I make that decision please.

renting is allowed...

...until you do it 20 times or so (per year) and DVC considers you a "commercial" renter. then it is not allowed.

transferring pts is allowed...

...but if you mention to MS that money/compensation is changing hands for the transfer, they will pitch a fit as compensation is not allowed.

It is allowed and yes they will ask you. You are suppose to tell them it is a rental.

Yes, and there is language in our DVC planner that specifically mentions that a member who maks a few reservations in the names of others is most likely not renting for commercial purposes (and that is the only type of rental that is not allowed).

You are good to go!

I have never had them ask me if I am renting points no matter whose name I put on the reservation. I have made reservations for family members whose last names do not match mine as well as a couple of rentals and not once was I ever asked. Is this something new?

Yes I think it is.

We just made a reservation for May/June at OKW. When Bill called MS to make the reservation, the CM at MS asked him if the names he gave her were the names of the people staying on the reservation. She was friendly, but professional. The three of us have the same last name and it is the same as on the membership.

The requirement to inform them on rentals has been there for quite some time.

The requirement to inform MS if it is a rental is in the POS I received in 1992, so it likely has been in every POS since day one.

I made reservations for some friends of mine a couple of weeks ago, and MS didn't ask. I guess they assumed it was not, as they live in the same town. Either way, I don't rent my points, I invite people for free.

But members seldom do it. I'm glad MS is asking.
I would be to if they asked routinely, hopefully they will become more consistent at doing so. That said, there really isn't anything differently DVC will do/can do until they get to the level that the commercial renting issue comes into play. Thus any effect will only be for a handful of members.

Thank you for the clarification, only recently when we call have we been asked also, even when booking only a room in our name.

Oh, would you invite me for free?:laughing:
