I am a DVC Member but am interested in renting points in advance (maybe 12 or 11 months out) for a reservation at Hilton Head for next year, so that I can get what I want. Since I see that you cannot cancel or transfer the reservation (to friends or family), it makes me nervous to pay that much money that far in advance.
So...say I wanted to rent through David's and I bought trip insurance,
Does anyone have any experience with getting their money back from rented points because you couldn't end up taking your trip because of work-related issues (or whatever).
And if so, what trip insurance did you use and what package did you buy?

if your a member you can have another member transfer points to you for future use. That's not a rental it's a transfer. Not sure you can rent points for future use without making a ressie at the time you rent.
Someone correct me if this is wrong.

Oh I didn't realize another member could deposit points into my account? How is that done? Through the message boards? Seems like scamming would be a concern on both sides???

not sure how and I never did transfer. I know a member can only transfer once a year (not sure if it's UY or Calendar year). Try posting about a transfer on the boards and someone will let you know how.

Well has anyone ever filed a claim for insurance with a point rental?

I rented through DVC-rental with Scott and we had to cancel our trip in September due to wife getting breast cancer. Alianz gave me a check for all expenses: Points Rental and Flights. I kept tickets on my MDE account and Dining plan was refunded by Disney.

Last year, I completed my first point transfer with a member on our boards. We were in regular communication and the transaction was completed quickly.

If you visit the Rent/Trade board, then you will likely see the names of many DisBoard regulars. I am comfortable renting/transferring with an established board member.

Ok thanks for the info. I'm assuming a DisBoard regular can be identified by "Dis Veteran"?

Yes, unless they have changed their tag, like I have done.

The Rent/Trade board is governed by posting rules, but I would still search for a recognizable name with a few years on the board and numerous messages.
