renting points for 5 nights,can I pay cash for the last night, not use points?

I am sure this question has been asked before but I am renting points from someone and want to travel in may but the number of points needed for a Friday night is 56, more than what I would pay rack rate. Is it possible to have the renter book my entire stay and state that the last day(friday) will be paid cash? Has anyone had any experience with this? Thanks!

Yes, this can be done. In fact you can reserve the cash night yourself or have the member do it for you.

Either way, be sure the member asks MS to link or cross-reference the two reservations.

I think you would have to book it through CRO. Members can only book cash nights through member services if they are occupying the room. I stayed on points (my own) Sunday to Thursday nights in May and then booked an AP discount room for Friday night. I cross referenced the confirmation #'s on both reservations and it worked out fine. I did have to go to the front desk on Friday morning to get new key cards (non-member cards) and a new parking permit. We did not have to change rooms.

Members can book cash nights either through CRO or MS. We're not limited to booking only though MS.

I've booked cash nights both ways. There are times when CRO has better room rates than MS.

If a member does book a cash night through CRO and wishes to link the reservation to one made on points through MS, he will have to call MS to have the two reservations linked and cross referenced. CRO does not have access to MS reservation data.

The OP said he/she is renting points. I know that you cannot get a member's cash discount unless you (the member) are actually staying in the room. It would surprise me if MS would book a cash rate for a non-member even if it was for rack rate.

It would also surprise me if MS would let a member book a room for cash for a renter (I think DebbieB is right - a member has to be staying in the room). It would surprise me even more if a owner would be willing to do this for a renter - seems like an unnecessary risk for the owner to take.

I think the OP should book his/her own room for cash for Friday night from CRO (after he/she discusses it with the owner if he/she has already agreed to rent the Friday night for points).

As you say, the two reservations can be cross-referenced. If that's done, there is a good chance no room change will be required (although there is no guarantee). I'm quite sure the OP would have to visit the front desk to get new keys for that last day.

About five years ago I purchased seven cash nights in a studio for my MIL. I received the member discount through MS. She was the only person staying in the room.

I also gave an employee three nights in a studio at BWV two years ago. She wanted to extend it by one night. I purchased an additional night through MS and received the member discount.

In both instances MS knew I was not occupying the room...

I guess you were lucky. I have been denied twice. I was told each time the member has to be staying in the room to get the discounted room.

As for reserving the cash room, wouldn't you need to put it on a credit card or pay before going. If it was a rental for someone you met on the boards,who would do this?
