I can't seem to work the Orange County Comptroller site when searching for a DVC member who I am looking to rent points from. Can anyone let me know how I can check? I click on search records, enter the name, but then get an "error running search" message? Any ideas? Thanks!
It worked for me this morning when I typed in our names in Grantee and hit search. I got all 3 of our contracts in my search results.
If databases are going to be fixed, they tend to be fixed during off-hours. Having sites like this "go down" during the middle of the night can happen.
Not all contracts are listed so not sure checking the Comptroller site is going to make a difference.
Truly and I mean no offense here; but checking whether a person acutally owns DVC is not going to be a sure fast way to avoid problems. The member owns your reservation until you check in. What few problems that have happened with renting occured with legititmate DVC members, so finding out who owns did not prevent the problem.
It is all about trust and if you are not comfortable with your owner then I recommend you walk away from it and pay the difference and book with Disney.
I think it is wise to look up the owner is to see if there are any liens on the contract. I wouldn't rent from someone at risk of foreclosure on their DVC contract.
Just like any of you can look up your own name, a good scam artist can find a name and contract at this same site and make up a reservation/points for rent.
Be cautious. Just finding someone at this site isn't a confirmation.

I just checked this out to see if our name is listed it is amazing that someone can see a copy of the deed and how much you paid.
I have rented out points before and I do not ask for any payment until I send the renter the written confirmation and contract. If the renter has any doubts about renting, I tell them not to. You have to be able to trust the person you are renting from.
Also, not all of the information is correct either. I just checked ours and it says that we still have a mortgage on both of our contracts and both were paid off (both over 7 months ago)

The original mortgage document will still be on file but there should be something in the results listing for your name titled "Satisfaction" that records the satisfaction of the mortgage.
Getting a check cashed in a different name isn't hard. It should be, but it really isn't. And there are plenty of DVC owners and plenty of common names - and names that are close enough to satisfy the average teller at "The Money Store."
Its working for me - I just checked and we are in there.
As stated just because a name checks out doesn't ensure your ressie is safe/real
I would recommend to rent from someone who has more than a few post - thats been on these boards for more tthan a day that maybe could send you recomendations from other people they have rented to.
Yes, that is because real estate transactions are a matter of public record.
If someone wanted to, they could go to your local Registry of Deeds (usually located at a court house, city hall or other governmental agency building) and pull up the deed for your house and see how much you paid for it.
Or if your local government made the records available online, as Orange County does, then they could see it just by using the search engine.
