Renting points and travel insurance

Hi, last year we rented points (through a friend), and due to my mom having a fall, we couldn't go at that time, and we were in the 30 day mark. We were able to use a bulk of the points within the 60 days, but scrambled to find availability. We actually ended up in a Copper creek cabin just to use up points. Anyway, since I'm not the member, would the Travelex Ins I see advertised cover this, or do you have to be the member. Also, does anyone know of a travel insurance that would cover us if we had to cancel, due to a family illness (elderly parent, and parent in law). Even with Disney's current offer, renting points from my friend would still come in about $1,000 cheaper, I thought if there were ins to cover us, it would still be less expensive to rent from him.
