Renting points and thinking about meal plan

We are former DVC owners who had to sell a few years ago for financial reasons. We haven't decided to purchase again, but are considering a trip in a couple of years. We have been purchasing gift cards for our children and grandchildren for birthdays and Christmas to offset the cost of the trip. Here's my question....if we rent DVC points (which I have done successfully in the past) can I use those gift cards to pay for the meal plan? If not, I guess I can use them to purchase theme park tickets, right? Thanks.

I am pretty sure you can use them for the meal an but I have never been a fan of the meal plan and prefer to just pick and choose meals freely without any restrictions. You can book up until 48 hours of checkin.

Only the owner can add the plan, and they have to call to add it and pay for it at that time. Per another thread going on, it sounds like they will only accept a max of 2 items for payment (like a gift card and a credit card, or two gift cards). You will have to work out with the owner how to get them the money so they can add the plan for you.

We just returned and decided that since the meal plan was going to cost us $1,498 for the week for our family of 5 (Me, DH, DS 10, DS 8 & DD 6), we would just put that amount on a Disney gift card. I'm glad we did it that way. We included tips on the gift card which would not have been included in the dining plan, and we came home with $300 dollars left!

We were able to have alcohol (only 3 drinks in the week), appetizers and didn't feel the need to have a snack just because we had a credit.

We had reservations at Restaurant Marrakesh, Sci-Fi Din in Theater, Fantasmic Package at Mama Melrose, Ohana, Boma and Paradiso 37. We ate lunch at quick service areas and had many snacks, especially in Epcot.

I think that if you get your gift cards at Target with the Red card you can save 5% on the purchase so when taking in consideration 1K, every little bit helps.

I thought ALCOHOL wasn't included in the meal plan.

XMom did not get a dining plan, they put the amount it would have cost for the dining plan on a Disney Gift Card and used that for payment.
