Not sure where this goes exactly.

If I were to rent points from an owner and say I needed 278 and they only had 218 what happens with the difference?

Is it better to find someone who has all the points I would need or what? If I rent this would be my first time renting.

Thank You.

You need to find one owner who has enough points to make the reservation. Points are of no value to anyone except an owner who is the only one who can make a reservation.

As an alternative, you could get a reservation for part of the nights from one owner and find another owner to make the rest of the reservation for you. But that is a hassle and comes with its own set of issues. Not a good choice for anyone not experienced with the ins and outs of DVC workings.

I'm going to move your question over to the Member Services Forum - we'd prefer all the rental questions be on that board.

"Renting points" is a bit of a misnomer....what actually happens is that you pay a member to make a reservation for you with their points. You don't get any points, or do anything with points yourself, because as CarolMN said, you can't. Only members can make reservations with their points. You would pay the member a per-point fee, multiplied by the number of points it takes to make the reservation.

So, in your example, if you found an owner who would rent to you, but didn't have enough points to cover the number of nights you wanted to stay, you could have that owner a make a reservation for the number of nights they had enough points for. Then you'd find another member to make a second reservation that would cover the rest of the nights. You could ask both members to call DVC Member Services and link the reservations, in hopes that you would't need to move to a different room.

As you can see, this could be a pain. It's much better to find one owner who has enough points to cover the whole stay.

having rented extra points many times...i would concur, that finding someone who ca cover the entire stay on one reservation is the way to go. usually this isn't a huge problem on the rent and trade board. The rules on this site make it so there is a high level of trust with me, that someone posting on there is reputable (though not guaranteed)...but I have never had an issue. The only small thing was folks understanding one time that it wasn't a regular hotel reservation that could be cancelled 24 hours before your stay
