I wasn't sure which board to post this on....We are hoping to use my MIL's timeshare and trade onto Disney property. If that doesn't work out we've been looking at David's Disney rentals. I need to know how long I should wait before I should request through David's rentals? We are going in May of 2013, either the beginning or the end going into the first week of June. Do you know the earliest you can request from his website? Thanks:)

If you own DVC you can book your vacation at your home resort 11 months before and you can book 7 months before at another resort. The rental sites have to go by these rules. You can also check out The DVC Rental Store to rent DVC.

Just FYI, if your MIL's home resort is in FL you will not be able to trade onto Disney property. According to the CSR at RCI it is Disney's policy to not allow you to trade for on property if your home resort is in the state.
We tried to do it last week with my Moms and thats what they told us. I have no idea how far in advance you need to book, I imagine that it would depend on when you want to go also

Do you happen to know if your MiL owns at a weeks resort or a points resort? If it's weeks what is the TPU (trading power)?

In addition to David's rentals, there is also a rent/trade board here that is usually $2 a point cheaper than David's rentals. If they are an owner, they can book at their resort at the 11 month mark, non-owners at that resort (but still DVC members) can book at 7 months out.

partially true...your home resort CAN be in florida but CANNOT be within a 50 mile radius of orlando....

also, if you are going to try (and i emphasize try) to trade into disney....you need to be on the phones making your reservations the minute the call center opens on the 1st day you are allowed to call...their is VERY LIMITED availability and they go very fast...

good luck!

I've rented from owners at redweek as well.

Have you looked at that? It's been an easy process, and sometimes folks list their units last minute if they can't go, and it can be a big savings. I got a week over Christmas (I think Dec 19th to the 26th) for only $200 a night in a one bedroom at the Boardwalk. It was a bit tight for the 4 of us, but so nice to be right there during the busiest week of the year!
