I have just on the spur of the moment last week decided to take a trip in January for the EE preview. I needed 13 points. I can't believe how hard it was to rent those points. Maybe if I needed more? When I finally hooked up with someone the transaction was complete in about 20 minutes. I sent payment via pay pal, they called MS, I called MS. That was it. This is something to think about concerning the price of points. A reservation for 1/27 for a studio at SSR was 20 points, and would have been 200.00 had I rented all the points for 10.00/point. A cash reservation was 220.00. Maybe that figure included a 25% discount, she didn't say. Perhaps the cost of renting points should be based on the cash value of the room, not dues or anything else. Because I had 7 left to borrow, I only needed the 13 so I wound up paying 130.00 instead of the 220.00, so it worked out for me. Otherwise, I would've have just gone with the cash reservation.

I have long suspected that the rental process is not as easy as one might think after reading posts ont hese boards.

HOWEVER, I think the problem you had is really because it was such short notice and early January. As you may or may not know, making reservations less than 30 days from arrival is a risky propostion for owners. If an owner has other opportunities to rent points, most owners would choose those over a short notice rental. I doubt I would rent on short notice unless my points were about to expire or maybe if they were in the holding account.

I know you were looking for a point transfer (glad it worked out), but even so, short notice right now can make even a transfer problematic - most owners will want payment up front before moving points to you and not everyone has paypal or will accept a check without time to see if it clears. It's also a bit of a pain to get to MS right now as they are busy making December reservations for many members.

IMHO, the price will always be more related to supply & demand than anything else. As mentioned, there are lots of opportuniteis for owners to rent, so no need to spend more effort for a "bad time" or "bad deal" unless the owner has a motive of his/her own to sell cheap or dump points.

Again, glad you got your points - let us know what you think of Expedition Everest. We "previewed" it from afar last December. My DH said he is not going on it ever and he will not LET me either! (like he's going to stop me, LOL)

Best wishes -

I had 950 DVC points and then sold 450 last year using The Timeshare Store. Believe it or not...there are times where I still have too many points and I use DIS to rent points. Here is my take as a rentor:

1. I prefer DVC owners to non-owners. I will make reservations for newbies, but that takes a lot of time and hand-holding for a small point rental.

2. I prefer a minimum transfer of 100 points as anything less is not really worth it in my opinion.

3. I prefer $10 per point rental but will take less if they are about to expire.

4. I have never had a bad transaction from the rentor or rentee in 5 years.

I was reading these posts about renting. I have a trip planned in Nov. of 06 and didn't have enough points to book everybody into WVL. My neice and her husband booked in the lodge. Could you direct in the right direction for renting points. I need 78 points for the week after Thansgiving. We would love to have everyone in the same building.

Thanks for any help you can give to me.

just go on the rent/trade board and look around for folks renting, or state your needs and see what happens. Godd luck.... :earsboy: Bob

The points have the same cost per point, regardless when they are being rented, so they have to be $10 per point no matter what month you are renting. sometimes it is cheaper to pay cash, and that is a good thing. As an owner, I sometimes pay cash, too, just because it is cheaper. I rented a grande villa last summer, and it cost 168 pts PER NIGHT, on the weekend. I nearly died! I paid cash, because with a discount it cost $750, which was 1/2 the cost. Then I rented out 75 points, and that paid for the cash price of the room. As mentioned, the risk for a last-minute rental is high for the owner of the points. I do not ever rent last-minute, unless I know the renter. Last year a renter called me to rent points because they were stuck in Florida with the hurricane, and they paid me after they got home. I would never consider that with someone I didn't know. :sad2:
