Hello,

We are driving down from NJ and wanted to know if anyone knew where I could rent a portable DVD player (the kind with a car kit)

I found some places on the internet - but whanted to know if anyone had personal experiences (good or bad) with renting and is it economical to do so.

Thanks in advance.:wave2:

We ended up buying one before our trip from Chicago to Orlando last October. It has a DVD player as well as a VCR, and if you buy an additional screen (which we haven't yet) each child could watch something different - one a DVD and the other a video. We spent quite a bit of money on it (Best Buy), but it has been a lifesaver. My 2-yr-old hated being in the car until we bought it, and now driving anywhere is a breeze! She never complains at all anymore.

I think it was well worth the money! :)

You can buy them from best buy, circuit city, target, etc for as low as $179 now. I just bought one with a car kit, battery, etc for $179 at Best buy. I don't know how much they cost to rent but you can use it over and over if you can afford to just buy it. As far as working, I had an audiovox, early model, that was horrible. I sent it back and got another one that worked horrible also. It overheated and had no shock/skip protection.
I just bought a Mintek that seems to work fine. I put it in between the front seats on the floor so both kids can see it in the van and it works fine. You can also buy the carrier to suspend it between the head rests.

My parents got one for us this Christmas, it is by Poloroid and is wonderful. It has a harness that hangs between the front seats, has a battery, car adapter and also a standard plug. We use it for car trips, but also for once we get there and we are doing something that the kids may be less interested in. They watched a movie while adults had coffee and dessert after a formal Christmas dinner where they were the only kids. I don't think they would have survivied without it! I would guess for what you would pay to rent one you can probably buy one after a couple rentals.

Another option, and what we did before we got our gift, was DH has a laptop for work. I bought a power invertor from Radio Shack (they didn't have the best price - wish I'd had more time to shop!) which allowed the computer to be plugged in for the drive. DH just played the movies on his computer, and used a couple bungie cords to brace it in place on the console. We paid just under $100 for that power invertor, but I have since seen similar models at Sams Club for about $50.

I bought my DH and DD a portable DVD player with a car adapter at Walmart for 215.00. It is great has a 7 in wide screen. They use it in the car all the time. You are probably better off buying one then renting one. Michelle
