I'm asking this here cause it seems some people on the DVC boards can get really "touchy" about the questions asked.

Anyways, I would really like to rent points for BLT for 2012 {as of right now we are planning on a cash reservation}. I have already figured up how many points I will need....402. But the problem I'm having is the coming up with the "lump" sum all at once. Does anyone know if any DVC owners accept monthly, weekly payments? :confused3 Course I would want something in return like the reservation # to make sure it's legit and I'm not just sending my money off to someone and not getting what I paid for in return.

I have a gut feeling I'm going to hear that no DVC owners do this, but thought I would ask anyways. Never know until you ask.

A cash reservation is no big deal, since I can pay on that weekly, monthly. Was just seeing if there was a way to save some money and still make payments.

TIA! :)

Personally I would not feel comfortable for either the person renting you the points OR for you in this circumstance. I would recommend opening a Christmas Account or other with your bank and auto-transferring your set monthly amount into that account every month. Then when it is time to pay the owner for renting the points - just pull it out of there and use that money.

If that won't work for you and you feel better writing a check to someone - just give the $$ to a friend or relative to 'save' for you.

Since a rental is simply an agreement between two people, paying installments is possible, it's just something you need to arrange with the person you're renting from.

I believe most renters would ask you to pay a deposit, with the remainder due 30-45 days out from checkin date. So, you should only need to come up with a lump sum for the deposit. At that point (like any DVC rental) you should get a confirmation number and be able to check on line that you actually have a reservation.

Once that part is done, you can simply pay a little bit each week (or month) until you are 100% paid by the "due date". Or, as mentioned before, put that little bit into a separate account (whether a bank account or an envelope at home) and then you have the money when the due date gets here.

As far as being "scammed", that's possible no matter how you pay. Read the DVC boards for tips on how to avoid being scammed.

I am an owner who hasn't rented my own points, but I have rented from other owners. In that case, I paid in full in advance - many months before my reservation. And it was non-cancellable.

If I were to rent my points out, I would not let someone pay in installments (unless you count 2 payments as installments). And depending on the owner's situation with their points, they may not let you pay as close as 30-45 days before your reservation because that could put their points in jeopardy. An owner has to bank their points 4 months before the end of their use year to be able to use them in a future year, so that is a "risk" date for the owner as well.

But in the end, it's whatever you can work out with an owner.

You never know, but most likely NO. Renters are usually renting because they want/need the money for something, for example bills or to plan a different vacation. On top of that, DVC points are in high demand, so why would an owner "trust" you when there will be another renter that can pay in full?

We looked at renting DVC points for our last trip. Most of the people I talked to wanted 50% down when making the reservation and the other 50% anywhere from 45-90 days before the trip.

Both times we rented it was just like this. We paid 50% down when the reservation was confirmed, and then we paid the additional 50% at the 60 day mark.

Just start putting your money into a saving account marked just for your trip.

Good luck. You'll love BLT.

Same here.

My personal experience as a DVCer that rented points to an internet friend (someone I had met in person a couple of time and had an on going message board relationship) I accepted payments and she was regular with the payments and then when it got time for the final payments she claimed a hard luck story. I believed her let the trip happen and never ever saw my money again. It was my fault for being so nice but that was the problem I was nice and instead of business like.

So, I would say and recommend to anyone who would consider to accept payments it is not a sound buisnes decision.

I put my dates on the "wanted to rent board" about 5 years ago and found a renter. We established communication by PM's , then e-mail, then phone. I printed up the contact that was on the DIS, and we both signed it.
I feel you need to establish communication, and then work out the terms. Luckily, I found a owner that was actually going back to school to be a lawyer, and he needed to rent his DVC points. I pay him by check and now pay pal, and usually I have it paid in full, before the 30 mark. We also do a 3 way conference call, when I need the Dining plan, and we need to book it through Disney. I also receive all the paper work from DVC, after he receives it and he forwards it to me.

Yeah more owners want payment much sooner than 30-45 days. If we ever rent our points (which I doubt will happen) I would want half upfront and half after I booked it and I would not give money back for a cancellation unless I could find someone else to rent the points.

When we rented our points, I asked for full payment within 10 days following making the reservation. I stipulated that the payment was non-refundable. Renter did not have a problem with this. I did later work with the renter because they wanted to move dates around. Remember, when renting you are dealing with a person, not Disney.

Exactly. We've rented 4 times. It is a big trust issue on both sides. I am really nervous each time that I might get there and not have a room.

I wouldn't rent from someone wanting the money all at once. Luckily people are different in their practice.

402 points is a lot of points. That could be difficult to begin with. It might even mean a member would borrow points.

I doubt you would be able to find a member, unless it is a relative or close friend who would let you pay in installments. If you missed a payment, they might even cancel the reservation and keep what you have already paid.

Most members will either want full payment after making the reservation or half to make it and the other half not too long afterwards. With no cancellation and no changes. And no refunds. Their points are in jeopardy when they make a reservation and if you want to change, it might not be possible.

If you knew someone IRL that would rent to you then that could be possible. I know when I rent it's 100% payment required after making the reservation and no refunds. I'll work to move your dates as much as I can but that's it. No one has ever asked to move their dates though. It seems most who rent points are very sure of their dates and trip.

Unless it's some super hard to get reservation, you could possibly wait it out until you had most of the money to put down as a deposit if the person can make the reservation for you.

Not going to happen with a Thanksgiving BLT trip (I'm guessing Thanksgiving because the OP is looking at Nov 2012). It's going to be costly and a prime reservation.

All you can do is contact the people renting points and see what they think. We can theorize all day long but unless we're the ones renting to you it doesn't matter.

You're just getting the same people responding to you....

We had the same experience the three times we rented. It works both ways - gives the guest renting comfort not paying it all up front and the flexibility of saving up for the final payment. And the owner has 50% up front with the balance due 60 or 90 days out - which is a fair trust issue on both sides.
Good luck - hope it works out. (p.s. I would not like giving my money to Disney too far ahead - just never know what might happen with those computers and the payment does not show up. )

Thanks everyone for the replys! :)

DH and I have talked about it and we are going to go with a cash reservation. It always scares me getting to Disney, motel, etc and not having a room. I think that would be made worse if we rented points.
Plus he wasn't to thrilled about not getting housekeeping every day if we renting points.:confused3 Don't understand why he cared about that for when he doesn't do any of the cleaning at home.

With our trip being over a year away, we will have a good lump sum saved up.

Thanks again!!

Well, someone must be doing a good job at home. ;)
