renting car on St. Thomas

Has anyone rented a car on St. Thomas? I am considering renting from either Budget or Avis, but am a little hesitant about it. I think I would feel better if I heard from people who had done it in the past with no problems.

When pricing out the taxi for my family of 5 to and from Megan's Bay it looks like it will be $30 each way, I can rent a car for $50. And then, if my kids get tired of the beach, we can drive around and check out the island, or another beach.

Also, If anyone has rented a car, did you reserve it in advance, or just walk up and rent one? I'm wondering if I could get it cheaper if I just wait till I get there.

I've also read somewhere, that someone had trouble in a port with the rental agency not honoring the price they had quoted. I don't know which island it was, or which company, but would like to avoid that if I can!

Any advice would be appreciated!

Just got back from the Magic (like 10 minutes ago!!) and we rented a car from Avis in St. Thomas. We just walked up and got a $80 rate on a Chevy Blazer. It was fun - just remember to drive on the left!

The roads are very steep and twisty. And although they drive on the left side of the road (British-style), the driver's seat is still on the left side of the car (American-style). If this doesn't intimidate you (it wouldn't intimidate me, but I'm not afraid to drive in NYC or Boston either), then by all means, go for it!
