I guess I ask this here..if not, feel free to move it, mods.. ;) As you all know, my hubby and I will be going on our 1st trip to the World in September 2007. Does anyone approxmiatley how much it would cost to rent a small camper or RV? We were thinking of staying at the Camp ground instead of a hotel, thinking it may be cheaper. But then I got ot thinking that by the time we rent the RV, then the campsite it may come out to about the same price. Any ideas?

I think you nailed the answer yourself. Have never rented an RV for WDW, but seeing the prices of the good full hook up lots, cost of a camper rental plus the gas, used to own a motorhome, sounds like you could get a deal on a cabin in Fort Wilderness or a room at a value. Shop around for a good code, go in value season and a moderate resort could be had. Totally different experience staying on property, espically in a resort, even though the cabins look great.

Hi, I have rented a camper and had it delivered to Ft. Wilderness. It is not cheap, and certainly it would have been cheaper to stay at one of the onsite hotels (value/moderate). The minimum rental is usually one week and the rental facility is only open at certain times. I would not recommend the place I rented from because their cancellation policies are extremely restrictive (to reserve costs $600, if you cancel - you LOSE that $600 regardless of how far out you cancel.) It also cost $100 to have them deliver/pick-up from Ft. Wilderness if you're not driving it there yourself.

There are also several other 'hidden' costs aside from the camper rental. Unless you're bringing all of your own linens, cookware, camp chairs, etc., you'll purchase convenience kits for everyone in your group. They run about $50 per person for the entire trip. Insurance will also be required. The price depends on the unit - I think we paid roughly $15 per day. There will also be a 13% sales tax, a cleaning fee and a dumping fee. There are mile restrictions (usually 100/day), generator use restrictions (but the generator won't be needed if you're hooked-up at Ft. Wilderness). All I can say before you enter into any rental agreement is read the fine print.

We had fun regardless of the cost, and we love the campground. It saved us some money on food because we were able to cook many of our meals.

Good luck on whatever you decide to do!

I've run the numbers a few times - if searched worked I could pull them up :)- and renting a mid-sized camper near WDW + FW space worked out to about the same price as renting a FW cabin. Maybe a few bucks cheaper for one or the other depending upon what discounts you could get.

For about the same money, the cabin is a lot nicer. About the only reason people could think of to justify renting the camper is if you want to have a pet.

We have 4 Chihuahuas, so we have been mulling over the same questions. If you want to check out the threads that I have posted over on the Camping board, you can see them HERE and HERE. There is a really nice RV rental company that I have contacted. The rates seem ok......you have to weigh out the benefits for yourself. The company is Camp USA RV Rentals.

We still haven't made any decisions, but we have a little over a year to iron it all out. Maggie
