Renting an RV in FL to go to Ft Wilderness?

Hi -- does anyone have experience in renting some sort of RV (trailer, motorhome) in FL rather than your point of origin? I'd love to go to Ft. Wilderness, but dh is fearful of tents for safety reasons (small kids) and I just don't know if we can swing a cabin ... but on the other hand, the cost may balance out.

I tried pricing this out a while ago, and I don't remember it being very affordable. Personally, I'd go with the cabin, if there's a chance you can swing it.

For fun, I just took a look at the cruiseamerica.com website. They have an outfit in Kissimmee. Rates for 1 week in june would be

1) $784/784/966 for the RV itself (small/medium/large sleeping 4/5/7)
2) Milage charge of .29 per mile. WAG of 10 miles from FW so $6 or so
3) Bedding/towel charge of $35 per person per trip
4) Kitchen supply charge of $85 per trip
5) FW charge of $66/day without discount.
6) Cab to/from CruiseAmerica. Another WAG of $50

Assuming you guys are a family of 4, total of $1,527 - or $218/night. Cabins rent for $279/night. Of course, this is all rack rates, and there are probably discounts for both the RV option or the cabin.

PS - Not to get too nosy - buy what exactly is DH worried about? Bears?

LOL. Bears! Dh is a suburbanite, born and bred. The whole camping thing is foreign to him. Anyway, he fears that our kids will wander off and get lost...like they couldn't do that anyway?

Thanks for doing the math. It sounds like the cabin would be a good bet. I used to RV w/ my grandparents (who took me to WDW several times) and I love RVs. My fantasy is to drive from NJ to FL and stay. Some day I'll have one, I guess.

I'm with you there, Andrea. I'm looking to retire with a cute li'l RV and spend much more quality time in WDW (sans hubby, kiddoes, and mommy dearest).

We tent camp - but only with DH along & we are very selective about where we do this. You can't lock a tent. The only thing keeping some pervert from coming in is a zippered door.

BTW - thanks for posting. I had considered renting an RV for FW also. Doesn't seem cost effective.

MommyandYh... Welcome to the DIS! I plan on retiring in my Class C, snowbirding to FW and working at the Outpost. That's my goal, anyway!

we did our first trip 7/2004 at the cabins. I had a code from All Ears (don't know if they are still avail) cost was somewhere between 160-170 night. We loved it, especially the boys, 3&4 at the time. They keep asking to go back there but we ended up going into DVC. I would definitely explore the cabins, you will want to look into getting a golf cart as motor traffic is limited. We did not do that and at times it got to be a real inconvenience. Best of luck
