Renting a wheelchair for my mom

Hi everyone,
We are going on our annual trip to disney in September. My mom is going to join us and we are staying at the dolphin resort. My mom came with us 2 years ago and all the walking really got to her. She is 76 years old and I could tell she was overwhelmed by all the walking. I want to rent her a wheelchair. I know she would not do well with a motorized one. I just want to get her a regular wheelchair. (one that we could push) I know the parks rent them but I would like to have one at the resort, so when we go to and from epcot (which we plan on doing often), we could just wheel her to the room if she is tired. Can anyone suggest how we can get the wheelchair for the week? We are going 9/15 to 9/22. Thanks

Some of the resorts have them, and would be happy to lend the chair to you for the week. But - these are sometimes in poor condition. (Pushing a wheelchair in bad condition is strenuous on your body - you can even get hurt.)

My suggestion - She is in her 70's. Try an ECV.

I am renting a wheelchair for my ds from Apple scooter. They will deliver it to your resort and pick it back up. The cost is $70 for the week. We did rent an ecv for my mom last trip from them as well.

We always get one from Randys Mobility. I like that they dont have an insurance fee etc.

They drop off and pick up at the resort.

We stay at the Beach Club and I wont use the chairs there or ask for them. They are not in good shape at all. I posted once how my dh tried to fix one in the lobby with the castmembers tools but it was impossible.

Thanks for the great info, as usual. Love the dis. My mom is hesitant to use one. She keeps saying "I can walk" but last time we went she was exhausted so many times and this time it's gonna be really hot. Thanks again.

some people like ECVs and some find using one makes them too nervous, especially if they don’t drive a car. The driver of an ECV also needs to be watching around him/herself at all times and needs to be ready to stop if someone wanders into their path (which does happen fairly often).


If she is open to the idea of an ECV, my suggestion would be to try one at a store like Walmart, Target or a grocery store. The ones there are larger than the ones at WDW, plus have a shopping cart arranged in front. If she feels comfortable driving one of those, the rental ones will be much easier.

if she decides she is not comfortable, you still have the option of a wheelchair. As was already mentioned, post 2 of the disABILITIES FAQ has information about rental.
