Renting a tent?

Hello DISers!

While reading through this wonderful forum, I saw a pic someone that listed prices for cost per night for each level of site, and also for things that could be rented in the "group camping" location. Can you rent a tent if you are staying in a single-family site?

I am seriously considering trying to convince my hubby to stay at The Fort for another Disney trip, but there are two problems: We live in NJ and we refuse to travel there during the busiest or hottest times of the year. Since I am a teacher, we are limited to shorter trips. We could not take the time needed to drive down with our camping supplies. We have to fly, but I would be scared to put our tent/ bags in a suitcase and check it (it is small enough to fit in a suitcase). I was originally thinking I could ship our tent down there (maybe even our sleeping bags/pads), but if I could rent a tent, it might be cheaper than shipping (and less hassle).

If I can not rent from Disney, is there an "off-site" place I could rent a tent?

Thanks!

You can rent from Disney. I'm told technically thier equipment is for large groups but if there is availability, they sure would do an individual rental. I'd definately rent those tents and that service from Disney before going elsewhere.

I hope others speak up. They have specifics you want. The info is on this board about costs, and there are pixs, too.

Do a search this forum. They are the sturdy, heavy canvas oldfashioned utilitarian type, not flyaway nylon pop up. Right now there are two set up in the site across from us. Disney staff spent a good hour and a half putting hard flooring in, tarping the tops with a protective layer, and installing a storage compartment to the side. Very nice looking, roomy setup with headroom. A troop of 14 girl scouts and thier leader moved in this morning. :listen:;)

WOW! I don't think we need all that! How big are do they look? Two tents for 14 girls? There are only three of us (DH, DD7, and myself). I will continue searching.

Thanks!

Can you rent camping gear at FW?

Yes. The official policy for Fort Wilderness is that rental tents and cots are only available to groups of 20 or more using Creekside Meadow, the primitive camping area. However, official policy and practice seem to differ. Individuals have rented equipment before and I've called FW myself and been told they do rent equipment to individuals if they have it available and a group hasn't already made arrangements to rent it. Tents are $30 per night, cots are $4 per night, so it's not cheap.

These are the types of tents I have seen the Fort use in rental situations in the individual sites and in the group camping area next to 2000 loop. They are about 10'x12' and maybe 6.5' tall inside. Note they have a stitched in floor.

I took these pictures in 2011 so I don't know if they are still in use but I have seen these there over several years. If there are three of you one cot could go against each side wall and the third against the back wall.
