Renting a car

I put this on the transportation board this morning but no responses so I thought I'd try here

We need to rent a car when we go to KC at Christmas. Prices between quite a few aren't that different so who would you recommend?

Just to clarify, we'll be renting it at the KC airport and just using it to drive around town and go back and forth between the in-laws houses.

Also, how much do you have to have available on the credit card you reserve it with? My neighbor says you have to have enough to cover the value of the car which I think is pure bull but I've never rented a car before. It's just a couple hundred right? And of course, the cost of the rental.

I rent with Enterprise and I am pretty happy with it. I find that about $300 available on a cc is usually enough. I have never had them actually hold the money, even with a debt. With a debt they have held it when the car was returned then credit it back a few days later but not when the rental started. My DH rented with another company for three weeks on a debit card and they didn't charge or hold until he was done with it.

The only ones I've used myself are Budget and Dollar and like them both. I have a friend who travels 99% for work and has used both those as well as Thrify, Hertz, and Alamo and likes them all just fine. He just looks for the best deal using online codes, etc.

we usually rent with National both at home and on vacation. We have always been happy. If you use the link through mousesavers.com, and join the Emerald club, your spouse can be added as a driver for free. That a savings of serveral dollars.

DS always rents with Enterprise and I know he doesn't have enough credit available on his credit card to cover the cost of the car and he has never had a problem renting and he rents serveral times a month.

Also check your auto insurance and your credit cards to make sure you have insurance so you can decline their insurance. That will save you lots of money.
