Has anyone ever rented a car in St. Thomas? How was your experience? Who did you rent with and how much was it? Was it hard to get around? Did you use a map? If we did rent a car, what should we go see? My son is only three and can't go on too many excursions, plus he has no patience. My husband doesn't like to hang out on the beach. Please help me decide what to do. TIA.

I have not rented a car, but that was really a matter of timing with our submarine excursion rather than a lack of will or desire. I saw a Budget office about a five-minute walk from the dock (www.budgetstt.com/html/havensight.html).

You should be aware that the driver's controls they drive on the left side of the road (British-style), but the car's controls are on the left-hand side of the car (American-style)... so the driver will be next to the curb rather than the center-line of the road.

Also, traffic in downtown Charlotte Amalie and in Havensight near the ship can be really bad in the late afternoon as the ships are getting ready to sail. You'll need to allow time for that whether you're renting a car or taking a taxi.

The other factor to consider is that St Thomas is quite mountainous. The roads are narrow, steep, and twisting.

But if you're still undeterred, take a look at some maps for suggestions.
