We are thinking about driving to WDW this year from Long Island, airfares re so high and now we have a dog I want to bring him to kennel closer to our vacation (best Friends pet hotel he will be staying at)

My question is “how much should a car rental cost me for a week – week and a half from New York? I really never rented a car and not familiar with the rates. Airfare YES, but renting a car NO. I should mention that we are thinking about going in July!

I need a good deal!!!! Also if someone can recommend a car rental company.

TIA

You first need to determine what size vehicle you need. You can't drive 20 hours with luggage on passengers lap or even on the floor by their feet. Only two people? Maybe you can stack some luggage on the back seat with the dog. 3 or 4 people plus the dog? A full size car might not even be big enough.

A full size car may cost $500. A minivan could cost up to $1500.

You have to read the fine print. Some rental agencies don't intend unlimited miles to include 2,000+ miles for a trip to Florida. Some unlimited mile rentals limit the states you're allowed to drive.

You may have trouble finding a reasonable price for a minivan.

We rented a mini van years ago when we wanted to drive to WDW from Long Island. Back then, it was cheapest to rent from the Newark Airport area car rentals. The difference was about a $1000. From the long island area it was like $1500 for the 10 days. It was like $400 by Newark Area.
The catch- Newark is 1 1/2 hours from us- but it was worth the savings.

Ask if there are any geographical restrictions on the rental. If you take the car out of the covered area, the rental agency can void your insurance and even sue you to recover costs if something happens. :rolleyes1

GPS trackers (to locate stolen cars) make it easier for rental agencies to identify customers who drive the rental car out of area permitted per the rental agreement. I think it's more likely any free miles will be voided and you'll get charged something like .25 per mile.
