Renting a 2 bedroom lock-off, then trimming back to a 1bdr

Hello - I will be booking a stay at Aulani in the next few weeks and it is not clear to me at this point how many people will be going. If I book a 2 bedroom lock-off, can I later modify it to a 1 bedroom (essentially canceling the studio portion of the villa)? Or do I need to cancel and rebook or a waitlist swap.

It would be a cancel and rebook subject to availability. If you are renting through a service, those typically don't allow modifications to the reservation.

Thank you . . . Not renting, I am an owner. Does anyone know if Member Services has the ability to modify a 2 bedroom lock-off reservation to a studio or a 1 bedroom, without canceling (essentially trimming half the villa off the reservation)?

We tried a few times and they could not r would not do it.

However, there have been a few reports of it happening but they are not supposed to do it.

It would make waitlisting for a 2 bedroom or the other ones useless. And, technically, if you have a 2 bedroom and want one or the other, you’d be jumping the line if a waitlist exists for those smaller options.

It takes more points (the LO premium), but you could book a 1BR and a studio separately and ask MS/the resort 1 week before checking that you would like them to be "connecting". That's the only way to keep party size flexible. But it will likely take 10%-20% more points if you do keep both rooms.

Just for others, though, this is not always possible. We had it once and we were on different floors. So, we now just book the 2 bedroom and if we have to change it, we gamble one night at a time.

Several years ago I had a 2 br. lock off at Jambo scheduled & my brother & SIL canceled - maybe 2 months out? I called MS to remove them from the reservation & MS offered to let us keep the 1 br. portion & cancel the studio portion & return points for the studio - we opted to just keep the lock off.

I have had them do this for me once, but it was under very specific circumstances and it wasn't just a simple modification. They had to contact a different department to see if the change could be made. Although it is possible it definitely isn't standard so I would never book a room with an expectation of this happening. As others have suggested, I would recommend booking the rooms separately unless you can afford to keep the 2 bed or risk having neither if the other guests can't make it.

Not the OP but appreciate everyone’s knowledge on this one. I was under the assumption this could be easily be done and was thinking about doing this for a short trip next fall.

It's not really clear if they "can't" or if they aren't supposed to. I wouldn't expect it.
