How difficult is it to rent a 2 bedroom unit at AKL during Decmeber? We are considering the first week. Should we begin our search now or do we have time to "think about it".

You need to start looking now. The first couple of weeks of December are extremely popular with DVC members. It is low season for points and the decorations are up. Most people are going to make or have already made their reservations for that time period at the 11-month window. Since most of Jambo house is already complete, there may not be any more inventory opened until 2009 when Kidani Village is open. I would get posting as soon as possible.

Thanks for the information. I have been looking and many of them mention a use year. How would that affect our renting from November 30 for one week. Would we need a November or December use year or either?

Use year doesn't matter. What you need is an AKV owner to book your vacation as soon as you have your dates firmly set. You need to do your research ASAP and you really don't have much time. The 11-month window for that period is already open, and all the complaints you see on the DIS DVC boards about the Member Service phones being busy are because hundreds of owners are already booking for that period.

Only AKV owners will have the 11-month window; if you wait until 7 months, I doubt if you'll be successful.

Before you start actually looking, go to the DIS DVC Rent/Trade board and read all of the "stickies" at the top of the page, so you'll understand the process. Pay particular attention to the FAQ, the section entitled "A Word to the Wise," and the sticky entitled "Attention Potential Renters, Please, Please read."

Also, read this thread, which contains much valuable basic information about renting wisely: DVC Point Rental Primer

As Jim said, the use year really isn't important to a renter. An owner may be concerned about renting in December if it is past their banking window. But they won't offer someone a rental, if they are concerned enough.
