Rental car reservations question

We need a van for our trip next month. The cheapest rate I've found for 9 days is through L&M ($316). I've read the various posts on L&M and it seems some people have had good luck, others not. I'm guessing it all depends on the time of the visit and whether or not they are overloaded (overbooked) with business. Considering we are going the 2nd week in May I would imagine they will not be as busy and we'll certainly be prepared with all the proper documents (driver's license, insurance declaration, credit card, letter from Publisher's Clearinghouse ).

But, to be safe, should we also have a reservation with another company as a back-up plan? Is this even doable? I mean, if we make two reservations and don't need the 2nd one can we cancel without penalty? Do we even need to cancel or do we simply not show up?

Any advice offered will be greatly appreciated and will not be taken as legal advice...

Considering the problems I had with L&M ( I never rented from them) with the reservationists being incredibly rude, the lack of communication and the computer virus they sent me (luckily I use Norton, scan my incoming and outgoing mail, so it was caught before any damage was done) I would not use them on a bet.
I would have a back up, but, please, if you do this cancel it if you don't use it.

Check with national; they are running some specials on vans; I just rented one for 8 days fro just over 200, plus tax. You can always make changes to their reservations too, if you find a coupon or code that lowers your price. Also, if you join the emerald club you don't even have to stop at the counter, just hop in and go.

Alamo's got an even better rate than National; grab some codes from mouesavers.com. I just got 8 days for 271.81 with tax, etc. additional days were only 32.79; that should put Alamo at about the same rate as L&M.
