We have two trips coming up and have already secured our rentals….or so we thought. My husband loves to keep checking on our plans and when he checked our Hertz rental for an August trip yesterday he discovered the rate had increased by more than 300 dollars! I didn’t think they could raise your price once you secured a reservation. We tried calling and the recorded message also says they will charge a five percent charge to talk about the reservation!! Has this happened to anyone else?!?

Check your rental agreement thoroughly. It may say that they reserve the right to increase the price.

Yes. Happened to me with hertz last week as well with two reservations. I cancelled once I noticed thanks to a post on these boards. Will never use hertz again.

What CDP did you use? And how did you book? It's quite possible the CDP was re-negotiated, expired or something else. On the bottom of your confirmation page, it will say "Your rate is Guaranteed." if it is indeed locked in.

Same thing happened to me last week. I used the Mousesavers CDP at Hertz and my rate almost doubled. I found out about it because someone here on the DIS got an email from Hertz about their rate going up, so I checked my reservation. Needless to say, I canceled and will NEVER use Hertz again.

I am going to have to wait until this November to reserve our car/van/suv and I am going to make sure that the rate I am quoted in guaranteed or I will go to the next option. I will eventually get one that is locked down.

Thanks for all the replies. Our CDP is with Mousesavers also. Wonder if I should try to alert them to this? Still can’t get through to a person at Hertz. Says voicemail is full.

Hertz screwed me over, too - I'm waiting til tomorrow to call, since I found at at 4:30pm today. I'm livid. I would change your title to "Don't book Hertz EVER in 2021"...

Happened to me too. Spoke to an agent who told me to fight it at the Hertz counter upon arrival. That would be insane and i'm sure a disaster. I am currently messaging with someone at Hertz on Twitter. Worth a try. If many people complain about this, they may reinstate the original reservation amount. If you look on Hertz's social media accounts this has happened to
many people and I don't think it's exclusive to this rate code.

No, they know that they can make bank this summer torching all the folks willing to book in March and giving their reservations at 3x the rate for those now willing to book now...

With these kinds of customer practices, I hope they no longer have customers next year...

PS - And yeah, I've already now got a backup Alamo res for $300 more than my original Hertz rate, but $700 less than Hertz now wanted...and I'm not gonna go the Twitter route...someone in corporate can have their precious time wasted tomorrow while I sit at a pool and let my kids swim...either that, or someone should take this to those "media bad business" stories they are always running on tv...

I just checked my reservation and sure enough, it nearly doubled. I took screenshots of my reservation email and have direct messaged Hertz on Twitter. We'll see if anything comes of it.

No it's not exclusive to that rate code, it is an issue with CDP's in general. They get modified from time to time. Seeing that the majority here are using the same CDP, if that gets modified it's going to affect more people here. This is why I use Autoslash. I might pay a little more than using a random CDP, but I know I'm covered and the rate I have is what I'm going to pay.

Don't use a CDP then. If you had booked at hertz.com at base rates, that rate would be guaranteed.

I checked - mine did not say anywhere that they reserve the right to increase but also did not say guaranteed. I guess I mistakely assumed that since I booked at that price I was done. Especially since it said "pay this rate at the counter." Can you imagine if all travel outlets were reserved in this "variable rate" format --airfare,hotels,etc.?? I probably couldve fought at the counter but thats not the way I want to start a vacation.

That's crazy!!!! I've never heard of such a thing! We only use Alamo and we've never had a rate increase once we've booked. I've cancelled and rebooked on my own when I've seen rates go down, but never have I had Alamo adjust/increase it on their own. I know all companies have their problems and none of them (Alamo included) are perfect, but I've read nothing but horror stories about Hertz. We've never booked with Hertz as they were always one of the more expensive ones, but I always thought they were a good, reputable company. Maybe they were years ago, but seems like all I read now are horrible reviews from dirty cars, overcharging, etc. I hope you are able to get your rate adjusted to what you booked. Good luck!
