Rental car drivers-one or both spouses?

When renting a car (which we haven't done much of, but will this year), can both spouses drive or just the one whose name is on the receipt? If you use a credit card that's in both names will that make a difference? And last, do alot of people do this?

It depends on who you rent from. Some charge $5. a day. If we rent from a company that charges, only my husband drives. For the rare times I would drive it is just not worth paying.

Just as mrsstats said, it depends on the rental company. Some of them will allow spouses to drive without a charge and some will apply a second driver charge ($5 to 10 per day). Regardless, they will need to see drivers licenses from both.

Consider joining the club or program from the rental company (like Emerald Club for National or Quicksilver for ?) as this sometimes will allow spouses to drive.

I noticed that at Alamo, using the Walmart code I found at MouseSavers, it allows a second driver for free.
We normally only use one driver because we don't want the added expense. But my husband is happy to let me drive for free!

I just rented from Avis. Just a regular rental except I used an AARP discount code. No charge for my wife to be an additional driver. National wanted to charge me in Savannah last May.

I had a ressie with Dollar until they told me in Orlando they have to charge $5/day-even for spouses. We're going for 12 days, so that would have been an additional $60. Through mousesavers I joined National's Emerald Club for free and got a great rate and both DH and I can drive in Orlando for no extra charge.

We have rented from Dollar in Orlando (MCO) several times and were never forced charged for spouse.

I usually carry a copy of my auto insurance and a copy of my credit card rules that itemize what the card covers as well in case there are any questions. My wife and I share the same credit card account in the event that was ever questioned by the rental company.
