Rental Car at Animal Kingdom

Is there a counter at the AK Lodge? I'm doubting it, but thought I should ask the experts. Anyone who has rented after checkin, how have you done it easily and with whom?

No, there is no car rental desk at the AKL. But you can arrange for a shuttle to take you to the Car Care Center (which is near the MK/TTC, but not within safe walking distance). Alamo and National are both at the CCC. Advance reservations are recommended.

There is also a National/Alamo car rental desk at the Dolphin resort.

Most of the Downtown Disney resorts also have car rental desks - you'll need to check the various companies to see who is where.

As you can see from my signature, we own DVC and stay most times at the BC and have rented from the Dolphin. VERY convenient. What kind of shuttle? Do I just need to take a cab or will the Alamo/National people pick me up?

It's a complimentary shuttle provided by Alamo/National. A cab may be quicker. Just depends on how buys the shuttle is / how many other stops the shuttle is making.

Another option is to take the bus to the Studios and then walk or boat to the Dolphin.

Make sure you know what the hours of the CCC & Dophin desk are when you are arranging for car pick up and drop off. Neither location is a 24 hour operation and the shuttle only operates during time the locations are open for business.
