I have never in my life rented a car. I wanted to know about how much can I expect to add a driver on our rental car? My dh will be the primary driver, but I would like to be able to drive if needed. Thanks.

Depending on the company you use, you may be able to find rates, contract ID, or coupons that include a free extra driver. Alamo has several contract IDs that provide a free extra driver. If you do end up having to pay, I would expect it to be about $10 a day. It is a huge money grab by the rental companies.

Most car rental agreements designate a spouse as an authorized additional driver at no additional cost. You do need to check.

You also might want to check if you can get any special rates through your insurance company. I get higher liability and damage coverage if I rent through my insurance company's web site. Rates are pretty good too.

I disagree, most do not offer a free additional driver for basic reservations, if you sign up for the companies rewards programs, some include spouses (and domestic partners).

You can generally find a way to get a reasonable rate without an extra charge for your spouse. COSTCO and AAA discounts generally include your spouse and no extra charge. AARP might be the same.

I found this on the terms page for Budget car rental

Do you charge extra for an additional driver?
Sometimes. Although additional driver rules at licensee-owned locations and locations outside of the U.S may vary, except for California, Nevada and New York, the fee for each additional driver is $13 per day with a maximum charge of $65 per rental. There is no additional driver fee in California. In Nevada the fee is $10 per day with a maximum charge of $50 per rental. In New York the fee is $3 per day. The following are exempt from the fee but must meet all other driver requirements: the renter's employer or fellow employee when on company business and renting under a corporate account; the renter's spouse or domestic partner; the companion driver of a renter with a disability who has completed the non-licensed renter form; for insurance replacement rentals, company employees or family members who are designated on the insurance policy.
It’s always best to check the terms and conditions on your online reservation confirmation or on the location information page to see which rules apply for your selected location.
