Rent Raised??

Does someone wanna explain this one to me? I'm not trying be sarcastic there, I really don't understand what's going on here...

Here at the DL program, rent just went up next month from $636 to $795. They said it's because there's 5 weeks in April.

But then here's my question... If we're going by the "week" like that, shouldn't we have gotten a reduction in Feb since it only has 28 days? Didn't MARCH in fact have five weeks? I can't see how they're deciding April has 5 weeks; there's not 5 mondays or sundays... 5 wednesdays maybe, but that doesn't make much sense. And lastly REALLY, they're gonna charge for the extra week? I suppose you could argue and say they've always charged by the week, but they don't; they charge by the month. (Rent's due the first of every month.)

I just wanna know what all's going on there so maybe I can feel better about shelling out an extra $160. Cause as it is my roomies and I are barely making rent, let alone living expenses, because at DL they aren't required to give us 30 hours a week.

So did anyone else raise an eyebrow or two when they got this email?

Yikes!! That seems high to begin with. Im doing the WDW CP in the fall and I think its like around $100 a person per week depending on how many roommates. That is crazy its going up so much for one month...definitely not fair to throw that at you!

That's exactly it! It's usually about $160 a week for us; per person. Quite a lot for four girls living in a two bedroom apartment. (With no pool, toxic mold in our bathroom, broken garbage disposal, burnt out lightbulbs, enterance burnt out downstairs, numbers falling off the walls... Building's less than a year old.)

To raise it up to nearly $800 is just crazy; I could be living in a studio in San Diego for that :/ Me and my roomies have talked about the idea of vacating housing and finding an apt. for ourselves.

Thats horrible...the WDW housing seems like its a lot better(i just hope it is haha) Are you allowed to not live in the disney housing? I know for WDW i asked because I was wondering if boyfriend and I could get a place together and people told me unless you are living with a spouse or family and its approved you can't.

As I understand it, it's because most of the roles received raises of approximately $0.30 under the recently passed Master Services Contract.

At the DLR, CPs don't have to live in the housing. In fact, it's a very new thing, having been brought back only recently after having been gone for a few years. During that time, CPers had to find accomodations on their own in the Orange County area.

Really? And they're able to do that by adding to our rent?? Hardly seems fair...

I'm sure there's some magic number percentage somewhere that describes how much of your wages Disney will take in rent.

As you now make more (and should be getting a big bonus, since the pay raise was backdated to a few weeks ago), the company probably feels it can raise your rent without having a significant impact.

Honestly, it's better than the alternative. I've heard that the Unions, not having been able to eliminate the CP entirely, were nearly able to have the Housing eliminated as part of this contract (technically under the contract, the DLR CP is limited to students from Southern Californian Colleges and Universities only).

Current CPers would have been given the choice of finding their own places and staying with the programme, or being released from the programme and sent home early.

From what I've heard, they backed down in exchange for the other concessions the company made with regards to the CP (alterations to CP Seniority, continuing to ensure that CPs don't have to be scheduled 30 hours/week, and prohibiting CPs from working Opening/Morning shifts).

Perhaps I am understanding wrong, but I am not sure how a raise matters to us at all if they are just raising rent anyway. In any case, we never signed a contract for moving in, so I suppose Disney can raise or lower rent as they see fit.

Even if that situation were the case though, I would still have an issue with Disney claiming the reason they are raising it is because there are "5 weeks in April" which is a completely nonsensical reason.
