Rent out points and pay cash for Moderate resort stay?

I would compare one trip with the same amenities to another trip so the only variables are downgrading the room and having to hassle renting out points

So OKW would cost 150 points plus $1928 (4 tickets at $482 each) plus $1890 to add Quick Service Dining Plan (as that is what you would get for free at POR)=$3818 Total for all 4 lodging, tickets, and dining plan
POR would cost $4900-(renting points) $1950=$2950 Total for all 4 lodging, tickets and dining plan

This is how I'd do the math - so its $900 more to stay at OKW minus the hassle of having to rent your points. $300 OKW is a no brainer, $900 starts getting into real money for most people.

There's an issue with the calculation - the 150 points number being used is for 9 nights at PVB which is what they are not wanting to do. The comparison was for the cost of PVB vs renting and paying cash at one of the moderates. I brought up OKW which would require fewer points.

The OKW studio is going to be around 102 points for 9 nights in Sept - that covers 2 weekends. If it does not include 2 weekends then it's even less. So using the calculation they had on the cost of their points using straight depreciation plus MF's it an "out of pocket" cost of $999.60. If renting out 102 points to compare OKW - which is the only DVC studio with 2 beds so the closest comparison to a moderate. And it should be bookable for them at 7 months in September. Then that 102 points value if renting PVB points thru Davids is around a $1479 value, not $1928. (And that is giving credit for premium resort point rentals in the home priority period vs the $13 used with the 150 points. )

So, if adding the dining plan for 4 ppl for 9 nights plus using the calculation of renting out 102 points plus buying park hoppers for 4 ppl it's approx. a $400 "premium" for OKW. If just out of pocket it's less to stay at OKW. $999.60 + $1890 (QS dining plan) + $1940 tickets = $4829.60. And there is of course the debate if the QS dining plan is even what they should have and that going with OKW plus tickets and then OOP for food could either cost less than the $1890 or else be better spent on dining where wanted vs QS.

I didn't know it would be 102 points. That changes things a lot.

You are also right about if they would even want the QS plan. I was just trying to compare what they would get with free dining.

I think a $400 premium for OKW over 9 nights would be worth it versus the hassle of renting out the points.

And Kathy, you probably didn't add room tax for the moderate reservation, which would eat up some of that $400. (there's taxes on everything else either way).

I think what this is coming to is that it looks to be a financial wash - so stay where you want. It isn't a big deal to work with David's to rent out your points if you WANT the moderate. But doing it merely to save money probably isn't worth it.

Maybe I read wrong. But I thought the quote I got was with taxes and all included. But even if it wasn’t it’s looking more and more like it wouldn’t be worth it if I can get the mrs on board with OKW. Thanks everyone for helping me sort it out. It definitely helped to talk/spell this out loud with folks way smarter and more experienced! Lol

I would also strongly recommend that you will not want to do the QS dining plan for 9 days. You will absolutely get sick of eating QS that many times. After 3 days, it gets really old.

One other thought -- you could do 3 or 4 nights at Poly and the rest at OKW. Do your MK and Epcot at Poly and DHS and DAK days at OKW.

Thanks for idea. Yeah last year when we went we decided against QS plan out of pocket cause it wasn’t for us. But would look past it more if it was free lol.

That is an option at poly. I’ll see what the rest of the crew thinks on that. I just really want to make sure both my wife and my mom are comfortable for this one lol.

Yes, I just don't find the sofa beds comfortable in any way. I'd be looking for 2 real beds for the entire time or else 2 rooms at PVB for a few nights.

That is the other thing I’m def considering. It would be mire points but And have someone a bit more guaranteed to love the resort and be comfortable. In all honestly that’s why we’d went the 200 point route. I said I wanted the flexibility to do stuff like this, or 2 bedrooms if it’s a bigger group, etc. plus if things go as planned with starting out family anyway, we probably wouldn’t be using our 2020 points fully if at all lol. Maybe go big form one last hurrah without as much responsibilities lol

DVC has totally turned me on to the "art of the split stay." I had no idea how incredibly easy they make it to transfer all your luggage, have a park day, then just head to your next resort that evening. I am becoming spoiled to the point where we will only do certain parks when we stay at certain resorts. And I strongly agree with the 2 real beds, and even more with the 2 separate rooms! 9 days is a long time, and even with my family of 3, I find those studio walls closing in sometimes, lol (maybe that's just me???).

Since split stay isn’t something I’ve done before, this might be a total noob question lol. But with a split stay, do you have to go up to the main lobby area to check out and “settle up” before you go to the park the day you leave the one resort? Or will they automatically do that if you leave a card in file for room charges etc? Thanks!

What we typically do is have a card on file (we check in online). The morning of check out they will email you the room charges and payment receipt - note that you can check this on the app at any time to make sure charges are correct. We call down to bell services, and they will collect and deliver your luggage to any Disney resort (we tip nicely on collection, and receipt). When we get the room ready text for the next room, we head that way, and call bell services again for luggage delivery. It's so easy, I'm surprised they haven't figured out a way to charge extra for it yet! :crazy2::ssst:

Thanks for he info! That does make it a bit more seamless and easy! Glad to have all these options to think of from you folks. It’s much appreciated!

One more note re split stay - before you leave resort #1, stop off at the front desk and tell them you’re moving to resort #2 so that they’ll make sure you’re completely checked out from #1 and checked in to #2. Sometimes there are problems (such as your MB won’t open the door at #2) if you don’t.

Sounds like a split stay may be your answer, but slightly different than the previous suggestions. What about a partial stay at OKW using your points, perhaps 5 or 6 nights, and then rent out the remainder of your points to use for 3 or 4 nights at a moderate or better (maybe you rent out more points, or even the remainder after booking OKW, since you might not be able to use then in 2020 anyway). You could use the money from the rental to get DDP at cash room, and even pay for some of your park passes.

as an example (not using real data here)

Use 70 points for 6 nights OKW
Rent out 130 points to Davids and earn $1690
Cash reservation for 3 nights $750
$940 left over to use for DDP, Passes, or out of pocket food costs

Wow this is some intense calculating lol. Appreciate it!

Gotcha. Was kinda hoping to avoid making trek. But I can definitely see the benefit. Wouldn’t want a tired day and then not get in the room lol

100% agree. It really doesn't take that long. :)

Another option is to stop at the front desk of your new resort and tell them that you were just at resort "x" and aren't sure that you are totally checked out of that resort. I've done that and the CM was able to make sure all was OK.

My two cents on traveling with in-laws/parents as adults:

There is value in having your own space that is hard to quantify in dollars. I'd get two studios or a two bedrooms before I'd ever consider sharing a room at a Moderate, regardless of the savings. My sanity (and ability to stand around in my underwear) have tremendous value. If I had the points to use a PVB I'd do two studios, with 2 bedrooms being the next choice if I did not have all those points.

Lol thanks for your input. We ended up doing two PVB rooms. While I might still not be in my underwear all the time, I think we will be much more comfortable lol
