Renew AP or not?

I'm a current AP holder who is only planning one trip to WDW over the next 2-3 years. On that trip (next May), we plan to spend 10 days in the 4 main parks and 2 days in the water parks. We don't typically park hop so I'm planning to buy 10 day WPF&M tickets for at least everyone else in my party.

My main reason for renewing my AP would be for discounts. We're not big merch buyers, so the main discount would be on rooms. In that regard, we're planning 12 nights in deluxe resorts (split stay). Along those lines, I figure AP room discounts could theoretically save us somewhere around $300 more than GP room discounts but this is not guaranteed.

We also want to get a TIW card as we'll be eating a lot of TS meals but I understand we don't need to renew the current AP to get that provided we buy the TIW card before the current AP expires (i.e., we don't need an AP to use a TIW card, we just need an AP to buy one).

The cost of renewing the AP and adding water parks is around $650 and a 10 day WPF&M ticket at UT is currently going for around $400. In other words, by renewing the AP, I'm paying an extra $250 on tickets for the possibility of saving somewhere around $300 on rooms.

So if you were in my shoes, what would you do? Along those lines, are there any other benefits of renewing the AP that I should consider? (just want to make sure I'm not missing something in weighing the options)

If you are confident that by paying an extra $250 you will save $300, then I say do it. (Unless there's something that I'm missing.)

I'm reading this as you are going to spend $250 extra to renew the AP in hopes of saving $300 on a RO discount. If that is correct, then you are only saving $50 overall. I don't think I would do it since you don't know for sure that the AP discount is going to be the same. Can you wait until closer to your trip to buy it if indeed it is cheaper?

For me that wouldn't be enough of a potential savings to warrant spending that much OOP right now. The $300 isn't a guarantee & if something happened to cause us to delay or cancel the trip I'd be out the cost of the AP since I renewed ahead of time.

Will you be doing any extras like tours where the discount could be significant (combined with the RO discount) and make it worthwhile? (I think, along the lines of the TIW rules, you only need one AP holder to make the reservations in order to get the discount for all?)

Go to the resorts thread and check on the AP thread there under discounts and codes. LOTS of us are finding almost no availability for AP discounts and the discounts that are available are sometimes not as good as those for the general public.

I am not renewing after this AP. The room discounts just aren't a reliable perk anymore.

Yeah, somewhat of a risk otherwise as others have said, I say to get the 10 day WPF&M ticket

Don't see rate to renew AP on Disney site. Is there a discount? Trying to determine if it would be worth it for us to renew. We purchased our APs Nov.,2014 and used them on 3 trips w/a fourth planned for. Oct.
Also planning a 4 night trip for 12/16-12/20 and trying to decide between renewing AP or going w/free dining stay since our AP will have expired....
