Renew AP or buy reg tix?

If you have a trip booked for after your APs expire you can currently renew far in advance. Our APs were set to expire Nov 28th and our November trip ends on the the 29th so I was able to renew last week so I could make our park passes! I wanted to be sure to renew ASAP because I wanted to get another renewal in just in case they hike up the price when they offer them for sale again!
Wow - I tried to do that and was told by a CM to buy regular tickets and trade up for renewals. No, sorry why would I do that?

If we call and renew via DVC would we 1) get the renewal discount rate and 2) would it be done as a certificate or would it be a normal renewal.
If you renew, you get the renewal rate. Doesn't matter if it's a certificate or "normal" renewal. It's still a renewal and pass would backdated to the expiration of the pass renewed, even if you didn't use it again for several months.

Thanks for confirming what I assumed was the case.

Question regarding this as I hadn't thought about it. So, our incredi-pass AP would renew on Dec 26, which I hate. We are always there sometime in late December so it would typically be mid trip, this year we happen to be leaving on Dec 24, so it won't cause "issues" with park passes. Obviously if we just renew normally 60 days out we'll get the renewal rate vs. the full new purchase price. That I can do online since there is no DVC perks with this pass.

Here's my question.....

If we call and renew via DVC would we 1) get the renewal discount rate and 2) would it be done as a certificate or would it be a normal renewal.

We 99% won't go back until mid-June and I'd rather our renewal period be during summer instead of December.

So, I guess my question is...can we get the best of both worlds -- renew via DVC and get a certificate that we can activate in mid-June but also get the renewal price? Guessing not, but thought I'd ask somebody who might have the answer.

That is not the way it works so most likely no. However, I have heard that some people have in the past been given the pixie dust when they went to activate the voucher and sure enough, it had the new date.

Now, I read a report on FB that someone said when calling MS to renew, they no longer give you a certificate, but activate it as a pass that doesn't require any visit to GR. The dates are actually the new renewal dates.

When they did my mix up in May, and allowed me to buy a renewal certificate early...way outside the 60 day window for my March pass, it did indeed have the one year expiration date (not dates it would be valid), so I know that will need to be activated at GR.

Maybe if anyone here has renewed within the past few weeks can post if they were told the same thing...verification is done by MS over the phone..so only those with DVC Y accounts will be given them, which is why no need to go to GR??

Given we don’t know what will happen with APs or the price when they return, I would renew it for sure.

Once they come back for sale, I am actually going to buy a few certificates for later use so we always have them!
So are you saying that we can renew even though they are not selling APs? I have the Sourcerers (I preferred Gold because I could spell it) pass that expires in November.

Yes. They have been allowing renewals, even though new passes are not available. You have to call MS to renew the Sorcerer Pass.

This is an old thread that has been bumped up. They let me do that in July of 2021 when they were not selling new passes. After they started selling the passes again they stopped that. Now you can only renew 60 days before or 30 days after your current expiration date ( I believe that's the timeline).

We have Sorcerer passes that will expire Oct 8. We typically travel in Feb, which would be preferred renewal time. Waiting to make park ressies until I renew, which first available date is this coming Tuesday, Aug 9. Intrigued and confused by Sandy’s post on renewing and also getting certificates. How does that work and is it possible currently? If possible, I assume not renewal rate for the certificates?

Thank you! I didn't see it was old. We're approaching our 60 day window around August 28. We are at Kidani in November and can't make park reservations (before and after Thanksgiving). I'll just be patient.

Sorry for confusion. Let me try again. When you renew, you typically get a renewal voucher that needs to be activated at GR when you go. Because it is a renewal certificate, the start day of your new pass will be the end date of the pass you are renewal. It was good for one year and if you didn't actually renew in that year, the voucher was no longer good for a renewal, but the value could be used toward a new pass...which right now are not being sold.

There have been a few reports in the last year or so of people who did that and the CM at GR actually gave them a new start date....instead of backdating like it should, it gave them a full 12 months from when GR activated it...

Now, the report is that when you go to renew with MS, they don't issue a voucher anymore, but an actual AP that has the renewal start and stop date on it...for example, the person who posted had just done a renwal for a pass expiring in early October, and the new ticket in the MDE account had the new dates already (ie: valid 10/2/22 - 10/2/23). The person was told they don't have to stop into GR as it is set to go.

My voucher from May for my March 2023 renewal (yes, I got an exception to renew outside of 60 days because Disney messed up and took a day off a ticket I had in my account when I had a valid AP which should have been used), has a one year expiration instead and I have to activate it next winter before my current one ends.

In the end, renewing simply continues your pass with no break in dates. Because APs are not being sold, you can only renew, which means your new pass will start October 8, 2022...you won't be able to push it out to start in Feb unless new AP's are back on sale and in that case, you pay full price, and not the renewal rate.

What I would like to hear is if anyone else who renews soon is told that the pass they are given is indeed an active pass that just kicks in as soon as the old one ends without having to stop at GR before going to the park.

Our APs expired right before COVID hit. As someone who was planning to purchase them again this winter (Jan 2022) for our March 2022 and July 2022 trips, I would say renew the APs! I never imagined the sales window would be so short.

Buying 6 day park hopper tix in both March and July this year was painful, and I plan to purchase APs as soon as it opens up (hopefully) again to avoid missing out on the opportunity if sales shut back down.
