Hello, I have a cruise coming up in November and my mom is considering joining us. Since she will be charged based on double occupancy, I was thinking about removing one of my kids from our reservation and putting her with my mom. Is this something I can do? Presumably I would get a refund for having 1 less guest correct? I just want to make sure this is the most economical thing to do. Along those lines, if I needed to move my room, would I be able to do so without a change in price?

Are you before the pay in full date? Then no problem to drop someone. If after, you may have a penalty. You can move your stateroom within the same category at any point in time without a change in price. If you change category (which moving to a different deck or part of the ship could be) then you will have to pay any difference in price to the current rate of the new category.

Yes we have a couple weeks before pay in full date. Thanks for the response!

Unless you are concierge (or on a restricted fare), you can cancel any passenger for a full refund before the paid in full date.

If you have more than 2 people in your room, then yes, moving 1 person to be the 2nd person in your mother's room would result in a refund for your room and very little additional cost (maybe just per-person port fees) for your mother's room.

Up until a few years ago, if you moved staterooms, you would pay the fare for the new stateroom as of the date you originally booked. That has changed, so that the fare for a new room is the current fare as of the date the change is made. I am not sure if that applies to all changes or only changes to a different room category. My guess is that if you were to change to a similar room closer to your mother, any additional cost would be less than what you'd saved by moving a passenger, but that does depend on the specific cruise and specific rooms.

Keep in mind the child will need to report to the muster drill (or a real emergency) with your mom. There may be a few other logistics besides the money they you may want to check on (like leaving the ship).
