OK so we're already in borrowing mode...with a Dec UY we have 134 pts coming in Dec... We have a quickie 4 night trip booked @ OKW for F&W in Sept. When I told DH the concert series schedule he was bummed that a band is coming the day we leave that he would like to see so he sort of half jokingly said "We have to stay another night"! So I looked into our options - flying SW so could change dates by a day for almost the same cost. As far as room options OKW is booked for the extra night so I could waitlist (10 points) but not sure the odds of that. Meanwhile for a sure thing, AKV is open for 11 points or SSR for 12 points. Hate to move for 1 night BUT.... If we borrow to book one of the other resorts for the one night and waitlist OKW which is fewer points what happens to the extra point(s) that we borrowed? Are they lost forever?

If all your points are borrowed for the trip then they stay in the UY you borrowed them into and you'll have until Nov 30th to use it lose the point or two. If you're wanting to stay I'd just look at it as a premium "cost" to stay in the same room at OKW if that were to happen.

Thanks. That's what I thought. Borrow it and use it or lose it. We're discussing....I'm hoping his initial excitement will fade (it's just the BoDeans)!! LOL

SOOOO being so OCD I compulsively check everything I book every day after I book it - the one night we would need to extend at OKW opened up!! So then I quick checked on the flights to see if we could extend by a day - was able to find the same time for the same price so I called & added the one night. (Looked again after I booked & it was no longer available so it was indeed just the 1 studio). Since we don't know what our plans are yet for next summer DH said to just go with it. Forget that we're borrowing. He did suggest that we drop a day off the beginning of the trip BUT I had booked us on JetBlue going down so I can't change for free so adding 1 night it is. Five nights now for F&W rather than 4 nights. Not so much of a quickie trip any more.... But he'll get to see his BoDeans!

Yeah but I would only do that when I have no more points to borrow and the tank was empty.

It's generally better to use the points one has even if borrowing over doing the OTU points. There really are very few and specific exceptions. If one needs more points but not such that buying more is reasonable, just pay for a transfer is almost always a lot better choice than OTU points. Those looking to buy in have the unique opportunity to give themselves far better long term options are a controlled price.
