Computer folks, check my logic (or give me other ideas)...

Background:
I mentioned in other threads about having an old, Windows 10 machine that couldn't be upgraded to Win11. I replaced that machine. Part of the old machine was a 3.5 inch 1Tb SATA drive that was the "master" for all of my photos are various files. When I got the new PC, I also got an enclosure to put that HD into. Everything worked fine.

That was October. Last week that drive no longer showed up. I checked Disk Management and it wasn't listed there. I had the enclosure plugged into a USB strip, so I plugged it directly into the computer. No luck. I disassembled, reseated all connections, rebooted PC, still not showing up.

Since I haven't scrapped my old machine yet, I plug the HD back into it, turn it on, and the HD shows up.

It's GOT to be either the enclosure or the USB cable, right?

Am I missing something?

More than likely the cable. The only other thing would be if the power isn't getting to the drive. Why not add the drive as a slave drive in the new machine?

Yes I would try to flip the cables in your new computer and see if it boots from your old hard drive and see if the new hard drive shows up. If not just get a new cable.

New machine is a mini. It's smaller than the drive. Lol

That's why I got the enclosure for it.

I don't have a way to test the cable.
I did test to make sure there's voltage at the end of the power cable and I do hear a SLIGHT noise when I turn the enclosure on, so I don't THINK it's power related.

Could it be a problem with the port on the new machine? Does it have more than one port you can try? Do you have another peripheral you can plug in the port to test it? Have you done any software updates since October that might not recognize the old drive?

Since it worked initially, something has failed in the interim. You have ruled out the drive itself by reconnecting it to the old computer. Therefore it has to either be a cable, a port, or a problem with the software. Good luck! I hope you find the issue soon.

Tried multiple ports, both on the USB "splitter" and plugging directly into the computer. Good idea on the update. There was a windows security update that went through on 12/14, I noticed the problem on 12/15 (didn't post here because I hadn't done all my troubleshooting and then was on a work trip.

Thank you.
