Remind me never to buy a gift from Barnes and Noble.

Thanks for the info. I just called the person that gave the gift and they said that they'll look for the receipt.

I can understand stores not taking back used items but these games are still shrink wrapped with the Barnes and Noble stickers still on. My DD is too old to be invited to birthday parties and I'd hate to re-gift something and have that person stuck with the gift if they didn't want it.

Just to clarify, we weren't asking for a refund just an exchange or merchandise credit to buy something else in the store.

I know there is a lot of cases of people stealing things and then trying to take the items back. That is why most places require a recepit

Just go to the budget board - there is always a thread about how to return something when you do not know where it is purchased from. Then there is endless discussion on what stores have liberal return policies.

It is sick really.

Yikes! I just checked it out and I was floored. Some people really know how to scam the system.

TC.

We donate gifts that are duplicates or something my DSs don't want to the Salvation Army or the local Women and Children's Shelter.

This has been the worst shopping season we have ever experienced with B & N. My son ordered a Biology text book last week and received Hellboy 3 instead. He had to speak with 3 different people to get the correct item shipped and is expected to take the errant item to the P.O. for them. I placed an order for after Christmas sales items: cards, tags, etc. and received email confirmation, shipping confirmation and then notification that items were unable to be located:confused3. We have our B & N discount membership and spend a goodly sum with them and the "customer service" area is a joke. I will look elsewhere before considering another purchase with B & N.

B&N and Borders are under competitive fire from Wal-Mart on the brick and mortar level and from Amazon on-line. There's a pretty good chance that at least one of these stores will be gone in the near future. Think about the immense size of most of their stores and how much it must cost to keep unsold inventory warehoused there. I enjoy going to these stores, but I understand why they have limited viability as a business model. That's not to say it's smart to limit customer service, but that may be what it has come to.

That doesn't jive with my Barnes and Noble experience either. I love them and they are my bookstore of choice.

I can understand needing a receipt. If it doesn't have a B&N sticker on it they don't know that it was actually purchased there. It's nice to give people the benefit of the doubt, but there are a lot of dishonest people in society. Even with the sticker, they have no proof that the merchandise in question was actually purchased and not stolen.

My DD got some games from a relative for Christmas. One she already has and the other is a game that she'll never play. The price tags from Barnes and Noble are still on so we tried to return them without a receipt for a gift/store card. The games were still shrink-wrapped in plastic and have never been open. The girl said that games are "non-returnable items". She said that without a receipt, there is nothing that they can do. However, if we get the receipt, they will issue a refund but only if the receipt is dated within the last 10 days! Of course that's not possible since they were Christmas gifts. GGRRR!

You couldn't do with an exchange or store credit???

sounds like you got bad info - especially since you were fine with an exchange. That really hasn't been my experience, and I shop at B&N all the time.

As a PP said, I would go to a district manager or another store.

Hope you have better luck!

If there's one chore that I absolutely detest, it's "returning" items..:headache:

If at all possible, I would save them to use for gifts for someone else or even drop them into the Toy Drive next year since they haven't been opened..:goodvibes

I think most stores will eventually beef up their return policies quite a bit as there's always someone out there finding a new way to "scam" the stores.. So as the old saying goes - "One bad apple spoils the bunch"..

Sorry your DD is going to miss out on the gifts though..
