Remind me again why I lug around a backpack of gear?

Because nothing is a fun as looking cool with a super huge bag of equipment!:thumbsup2

Because you already walk enough at Disney, so why also zoom wih your feet?

Because you don't just want a good picture, you want to be able to go into a 20 minute explanation about your choice of lens, how you stopped down the aperture, etc. ;)

Don't you know you need all that gear to get really good shots? ;)

Because to get an iPhone, you have to buy an Apple product...

I'd rather buy Nikon than Apple :p

(Not to mention, taking ~150-300 shots a day will drain the battery to nothing, and iPhones do not allow you to have multiple batteries, so you'd need to find a plug and spend half your day there, or purchase an external charger/battery for an exorbitant cost because it's for an iPhone)

Because your back wouldn't feel the same without the pack full of gear.

I carry mine because my doctor recommends weight bearing exercise.

+1

Also, to be serious for a second, there are things that a camera phone just cannot do. Nobody ever says, "Wow, that iPhone has such buttery smooth bokeh!"

I hadn't thought of the battery thing. Good point. they also stink in low light (though Apple claims improved performance with the 5).

The new panaroma feature on the iPhone is pretty sweet though. I suppose that tech could be put in DSLRs or mirrorless can't it?

It's in most Sony cameras I believe.

Bringing that bee pic up full size... I don't believe it would be possible for that pic to be recreated with an off the street iPhone 5.

Who knows, call me skeptical...

As Havoc mentioned, Sony pioneered that sweep panorama functionality years ago in their P&S line, and it migrated over to their DSLRs, SLTs, and mirrorless cameras too as of almost 2 years ago...Apple is actually a little late to the party on that one!

Personally, I can't think of anything more annoying than having my camera suddenly ring with a call when I'm lining up a great shot...I'll keep my cameras and my phones seperate, thank you very much!! ;)

This may sound harsh, but I suspect that over 50% of DSLR owners would be better off with an iPhone 5 and knowledge of how to capture good photos than their DSLRs and their current knowledge.

I am probably in that category but I think I'm better off with my DSLR because with that, I want to learn. I doubt I would have the passion to learn and the patience to make one mistake after another just to get one good photo and learn something that takes me a little closer towards taking some good photos. :goodvibes

That's the biggest difference! If you don't want to learn, don't bother buying one. My sister was thinking about buying my DSLR when I upgraded, and I basically talked her out of it. I told her it's a great camera, but it's too much camera if she's not going to try to learn to use it. If you want to learn, it's good, go for it. I've been hanging out with a professional photographer this summer, just to learn more about photography even though I don't want to be a professional!

An iPhone (even a 5) is not a substitute for a good camera but it does have a decent camera that can give surprisingly good results when the subject is suitable and the light is right.

Even in HDR mode it struggles with this one, where a good camera could do much better.

Overall, I will not feel as restricted using the iPhone camera as I would have using my old phone but I do not plan to carry it instead of a camera.
